Gary: Hi Mike.
Caller: Great show, thanks for taking my call. I&#8217;m a recovering worrier&#8211;not so recovered, but anyways, my question&#8211;and I have a lot of questions about worry, but my main one was pretty specific&#8211; basically, I got a bunch of racehorses. I inherited them from my family, and I love them but I worry that not what God wants for me in my life, to have a bunch of racehorses. Because they take a lot of time, they take money. I mean I&#8217;m hoping someday to make money with them, but that&#8217;s&#8230;it&#8217;s basically a big gamble. and I worry a lot about&#8230;just&#8230;does God have&#8230;is He definitely making sure that I&#8217;m doing His will in my life? You know what I mean?
Gary: I do. Mike, that&#8217;s&#8211;I&#8217;m gonna tell&#8211; first of all, I&#8217;m going to congratulate you; the fact that you care to do God&#8217;s will, that&#8217;s really, that&#8217;s impressive, you know. And that&#8217;s gonna really please Him. He wants that. The fact that you care, &#8220;Am I doing God&#8217;s will?&#8221; How do you know whether you&#8217;re doing God&#8217;s will or not? This is something that I have dealt with. I continue to deal with it, almost on a daily basis. I would say: spend some time with Him every day. Ask Him&#8211;you know, if you can go to Eucharistic Adoration, that&#8217;s been one of my&#8230;the most helpful things to me, to spend time with the Lord in His presence, and you get that feeling. &#8220;Lord, am I doing this? Is this what you want me to do? Make your will obvious to me.&#8221;
It takes time sometimes. In my case, He doesn&#8217;t give me an answer right away, but ultimately&#8211; if the Lord wants you to do something, if He wants you to maybe get rid of some of the racehorses and give more money to the Church, He&#8217;s going to make you aware of this. And the fact that you&#8217;re having that feeling, He might be saying that. But just see what happens. Continue to ask Him, and see if that feeling to do this or to do that remains. And He&#8217;s going to let you know.

Interior Life

The nature of marriage has been a subject of much discussion and debate over the last couple of decades. Receiving somewhat less attention are the differences among religions over marriage, particularly the differences between Islam and Christianity. In many respects, Islam and Christianity share a common view of the importance of marriage, but there are some significant differences that all Christians should understand.
The Catholic faith teaches that marriage is an unbreakable bond between a man and a woman. The foundations for this understanding can be found in both the Old and New Testaments:
<blockquote>So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” . . . Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh (Gen. 1:27-28, 2:24).</blockquote>
<blockquote>Husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church (Eph. 5:28-33).</blockquote>
The Catechism builds upon God’s call to this fruitful, loved-filled, and unbreakable bond:
<blockquote>The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament (1601).</blockquote>
Holy Scripture affirms that man and woman were created for one another: “It is not good that the man should be alone.” The woman, “flesh of his flesh,” his equal, his nearest in all things, is given to him by God as a “helpmate”; she thus represents God, from whom comes our help (CCC 1605a).
To Catholics, marriage between baptized persons is a sacrament, which has the meaning of oath or covenant. This covenant bond is a lifelong exchange of persons with God as witness. This exchange forms the basis for a community of love that reflects the sacrificial and holy love God has for his people and is ordered for the good of the man and woman and toward the begetting and education of children. We heed Christ’s words—“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate” (Mark 10:9)—so, after a baptized couple consummates a validly contracted marriage, it is <a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/print-edition/did-jesus-say-adultery-is-grounds-for-divorce">impossible</a> to break that union except by death. (Non-sacramental marriages, where one or both spouses are unbaptized, are also ordinarily indissoluble except in certain <a href="https://www.catholic.com/qa/can-marriages-between-unbaptized-people-be-dissolved-by-divorce">rare cases</a>.)
Like Christianity, Islam values marriage as an important institution for the building of family and society and an integral part of salvation. Various hadiths (traditional religious sayings) bear this out. For example: “There is no foundation that has been built in Islam more loved by Allah . . . than marriage. . . . Allah loves no permissible like marriage, and Allah hates no permissible like divorce” (Mustadrak al-Wasa’il). “Whoever gets married has safeguarded half of his religion” (Wasa’il al-Shia).
The Quran and tradition give further guidance and reasons to marry:
<blockquote>And marry off the single among you and among the righteous of your male and female slaves. If they are poor then Allah will supply their needs from his generosity. And Allah is expansive, knowing. And let those who do not find marriage hold back until Allah grants them of his generosity (Quran 24:32-33).</blockquote>
<blockquote>O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty, and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual desire” (Sahih al-Bukhari).</blockquote>
<blockquote>Whoever chooses to follow my tradition must get married and produce offspring through marriage (and increase the population of Muslims), so that on the Day of Resurrection, I shall confront other Ummah (nations) with the (great) numbers of my Ummah (Wasa’il al-Shia).</blockquote>
Marriage is so important within Islam that no other option is recognized as praiseworthy. Unlike Catholics, who view celibacy for the sake of the kingdom as a high calling, Muslims <a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/what-islam-says-about-chastity">see the permanent celibate life as unnatural</a>, given men’s sexual needs and the community’s need to grow. Muslims are encouraged to marry early in life in order to avoid forbidden sexual relations (known as zina).
The Arabic word most often associated with marriage is nikah, which means “contract.” A widely quoted definition from influential Salafi cleric Ibn ‘Uthaimin states that marriage is “a mutual contract between a man and a woman whose goal is for each to enjoy the other, become a pious family and a sound society.”
Now, a contract is a promise regarding an exchange of goods. A Muslim marital contract is brokered between two men—the husband-to-be and a representative for the wife-to-be. The contract stipulates the exchange of a mahr, or “bride price,” in exchange for the woman’s hand. It dictates that married life be conducted in accordance with the Quran and requires consent by the woman and two witnesses.
The first and most common category of marriage is the nikah between one man and one woman.  A second category, though, is called a nikah mut’ah, or temporary marriage. This type of “marriage” is common in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shia_Islam">Shia Islam</a> and is designed to make otherwise illicit sexual acts licit by a short-term legal arrangement. Although most <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunni_Islam">Sunni Muslims</a> reject nikah mut’ah, they accept nikah misyar, in which both prospective husband and wife agree to give up certain normal marital rights, like living together, equality between wives, rights to income, and rights of homekeeping, in order to be married. This can be understood as a middle ground between a nikah and a nikah mut’ah.
In addition to these different types of marriage, in Islam, one man can have multiple wives and contract several different types of marriages at the same time. “And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four” (Quran 4:3). This verse and others like it condone polygynous relationships (between one man and multiple women—but not one woman and multiple men). Men are allowed to marry up to four women, provided that they can treat them all equally (see Quran 4:129).
Classically, Muslim men were also allowed to conduct sexual relations with their female slaves, a practice that was brought back recently by ISIS and is found in the Quran: “And they who guard their private parts except from their wives and those their right hands possess [concubines] . . . they will not be blamed” (23:6).
Divorce by either party is allowable within Islam, though it is discouraged. “And when you divorce women and they fulfil their term [of their ‘Iddah, or post-divorce waiting period], either keep them according to reasonable terms or release them according to reasonable terms, and do not keep them, intending harm, to transgress [against them]” (Quran 2:231).
If either party violates the conditions of the signed marital contract or if they have irreconcilable differences, they can obtain a wide variety of types of divorces: from khul’ (mutual contractual divorce initiated by the wife) to talaq (a variety of simple ways for the husband to repudiate the wife, usually requiring a waiting period before the divorce is finalized) to three different types of divorce oaths and finally judicial divorce. Historically, this last right was given to men only, but recently, in some places, women have been given the right to divorce as well.
So although from a distance Christian and Muslim marriages may look a lot alike, there are major differences. Marital contracts within Islam elevate marriage above the mundane while allowing for the reality of man’s frailty, but Islam&#8217;s allowance for multiple wives, temporary sexual arrangements, and partial forms of marriage expose a baser contractual view of marriage that falls far short of God’s plan for lifelong covenantal relationships.

Marriage: Christianity vs. Islam

Psalm 91 says that the one “who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.’”
It’s a powerful and profound psalm asking for God’s protection.
But will the psalm itself protect you?
Some people are saying that this psalm has unusual protective abilities. And that you should leave your Bible open to it if you want protection. But is that true—or is this a matter of superstition?
The answer is that we need to approach this psalm in a balanced way.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that superstition “can even affect the worship we offer the true God, e.g., when one attributes an importance in some way magical to certain practices otherwise lawful or necessary.”
The Catechism says, “To attribute the efficacy of prayers or of sacramental signs to their mere external performance, apart from the interior dispositions that they demand, is to fall into superstition” (CCC 2111).
So if you think that Psalm 91 is a magical text that will somehow protect you all by itself, that would be superstition.
It’s also superstition if you think leaving a Bible open to Psalm 91 will somehow protect you.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t pray Psalm 91 for protection.
After all, it is a prayer.
So if you pray Psalm 91 and ask God to protect you, that’s just fine. Because it’s God that you’re asking for protection. It’s him that you’re putting your trust in—not the words of the psalm.
In the same way, if you want to leave a Bible open to Psalm 91 as a kind of enacted prayer—
Like saying to God, “O Lord, please look down on the words of this psalm. They are my prayer to you. Please protect me.”
Then you are again asking God for protection and trusting in him to provide it.
This doesn’t mean that you’ll be protected from any and every danger.
God allows us to face difficulties in life.
As St. Paul says in Acts 14:22, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.”
But we can also trust God to help us get through those hardships.
He will guide us, he will protect us, and he will make sure that we arrive in heaven at the end.
But it is in him that we need to put our trust.
Not in a particular set of words—including the words of Psalm 91.
So don’t trust in words.
Trust in God.
He loves you.

Psalm 91: Prayer for Protection vs. Superstition (Let’s Debunk)

In 1971, Irish band the Dubliners had a hit with &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoCagUKAhik">Hand Me Down My Bible</a>&#8221; about a hard-living sinner who repents. The refrain of the song is:
<blockquote>Oh oh glorio,
Now I’m the Lord’s disciple 
Oh oh glorio, 
Now hand me down my Bible</blockquote>
That’s a good jumping-off point to talk about Sacred Tradition, which is all about “hand-me-downs.”
<a href="https://www.etymonline.com/word/tradition">The word comes from</a> the Latin tradere, to deliver or hand over, which is itself a compound word made up of dare, “to give,” and the prefix trans, “over.” (That’s also the origin of the word traitor, which was used to describe Christians who cooperated with the Romans in handing over sacred things—or other Christians). Of course, the New Testament word for tradition isn’t from Latin but Greek, but it’s remarkably similar. The Greek word <a href="https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&amp;strongs=g3862">paradosis</a> also means to hand on, and <a href="https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G3860">the verb form</a> also has the secondary meaning of betrayal.
In both Latin and Greek, it’s handing something on . . . or handing someone over.
I mention all of this because something gets lost in our English word tradition. Both the Latin and Greek nouns come from verbs, but English doesn’t have a verb form of the word. So we end up thinking of a tradition as “the way we tend to do things,” when it actually is a thing handed on.
With that understanding, you see why Catholics and Protestants often talk past one another on this topic. Protestants tend to hear “custom or rule,” whereas Catholics mean “something passed on.” And it’s too bad, because you simply can’t have Christianity without Tradition.
Think about it this way. How do we:

<li>Have the biblical texts?</li>
<li>Know that the Bible is trustworthy?</li>
<li>Know which books belong in Scripture?</li>
<li>Understand how they’re to be interpreted?</li>
<li>Know information about Jesus, Mary, and the apostles that isn’t spelled out in Scripture?</li>
</ul>
The answer in every case involves trusting those who came before us: those who handed down the words of Scripture, handed down which books were inspired, and handed down how to interpret them. Each part is Tradition.
Jesus didn’t place a leather-bound New Testament directly into your hands. He created a Church, in which these texts were written, preserved, and passed on, under the ongoing guidance of the Holy Spirit. In other words, Jesus transmitted divine revelation via Tradition, so if you can’t trust Tradition, then you can’t trust the revelation.
Since Sacred Scripture is part of Sacred Tradition, that means Tradition is bigger. It tells us things about the Bible that the Bible doesn’t say about itself (for example, there’s nothing in the Bible that tells us which books belong in the Bible). The apostles recognized this about their own writings—that they were part of a broader transmission of the Faith.
That’s why, in 2 Thessalonians 2:15, St. Paul instructs his readers to “stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.” The mode of transmission—written or unwritten—is irrelevant. It’s all Tradition.
The Second Vatican Council describes this relationship between Scripture and the rest of Tradition beautifully:
<blockquote>The apostolic preaching, which is expressed in a special way in the inspired books, was to be preserved by an unending succession of preachers until the end of time. Therefore the apostles, handing on what they themselves had received, warn the faithful to hold fast to the traditions which they have learned either by word of mouth or by letter (see 2 Thess. 2:15), and to fight in defense of the faith handed on once and for all (see Jude 1:3). Now, what was handed on by the apostles includes everything which contributes toward the holiness of life and increase in faith of the peoples of God; and so the Church, in her teaching, life and worship, perpetuates and hands on to all generations all that she herself is, all that she believes.
This tradition which comes from the apostles develops in the Church with the help of the Holy Spirit. [&#8230;.] The words of the holy fathers witness to the presence of this living tradition, whose wealth is poured into the practice and life of the believing and praying Church. Through the same tradition the Church’s full canon of the sacred books is known, and the sacred writings themselves are more profoundly understood and unceasingly made active in her; and thus God, who spoke of old, uninterruptedly converses with the bride of his beloved Son; and the Holy Spirit, through whom the living voice of the Gospel resounds in the Church, and through her, in the world, leads unto all truth those who believe and makes the word of Christ dwell abundantly in them (see Col. 3:16).</blockquote>
As “one sacred deposit of the word of God” and “flowing from the same divine wellspring,” Scripture and Tradition “merge into a unity and tend toward the same end”—the reliable handing-on of the Faith.
Of course, not every theological hand-me-down is divine revelation traceable to Jesus through the apostles. Some things come from other sources, and these “man-made traditions” are fine if they help us understand the gospel, but they become a problem when they interfere with it. In Mark 6:7, Jesus accuses the Pharisees of abandoning God’s commandments in favor of the tradition of men. Some cite this verse as anti-Tradition, but it’s not. Rather, it’s against man-made tradition . . . when it interferes with the commandments of God.
The New Testament uses the word paradosis in exactly this dual way. In some cases, like 2 Thessalonians 2:15, it’s used for revealed, apostolic Tradition, and there it’s treated as sacred and binding. In other cases, like Mark 7:8, it’s used to refer to things handed on from other sources—and there it’s condemned if and when it interferes with adherence to the gospel. But a lot of Protestants don’t understand that Sacred Tradition is good, or even that there’s a difference between Tradition and man-made traditions.
One reason is the Protestant bias against the word tradition that is reflected in some Bible translations. The popular NIV, for example, translates paradosis as “tradition” any time it’s used negatively. But when paradosis is used positively, the NIV tends to change the word to “teachings” (even though that’s not really what paradosis means). So, for example, it renders 2 Thessalonians 2:15 as “stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.”
And in 2 Thessalonians 3:6, where Paul warns the Thessalonians to “keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us,” the NIV again changes the word to “teaching.”
It’s important to realize and, when discussing Tradition with Protestants, to point out to them, that the biblical word to describe good hand-me-downs that we should accept is the exact same word used in all the places where bad, man-made hand-me-downs are rejected (when they obstruct the gospel).
The Bible doesn’t reject Tradition as inherently evil. Some Bible translations seem to, but that’s because translators put their own theological tradition over faithfully translating the sacred texts.

The Bible Against Tradition?

<div>How many archangels are there?</div><div>The only archangels mentioned in the Bible are Michael (Rev. 12:7), Gabriel (Luke 1:19), and Raphael (Tob. 12:15). How many there are besides these three is unknown. Scripture refer to the numbers of angels only as &#8220;hosts&#8221; and &#8220;a multitude&#8221; and &#8220;thousands upon thousands.&#8221;

How Bad Is it to Miss Mass?

<div>Why did the Council of Laodicea not reaffirm the same canon of Scripture from the earlier Council of Carthage? It specifically doesn’t include the deuterocanonical books.</div><div>The &#8220;Council of Laodicea&#8221; was a regional synod and not an ecumenical council. Therefore, it is useful in terms of ascertaining practices of the time period but nothing it decided is considered an infallible decree.
Canon 60 of the synod deals with the books of Scripture. This canon is not held by anyone to be a definitive list. The canon&#8217;s listing of the New Testament omits the book of Revelation. It also would not be entirely accurate to say that it does not include the deuterocanonical books. It&#8217;s listing of the Old Testament includes the normative Jewish canon plus the book of Baruch and the letter of Jeremiah.
However, all of the debate over canon 60&#8217;s listing of books is most likely for naught. The authenticity of the canon is considered spurious. It is missing from many ancient manuscripts and is believed to have been added on at a later time.

Council of Laodicea and Scripture

<div>Has there been any changes in the Church in the past few years that would allow a pastoral associate to give a homily even though he has about two more years before becoming a deacon?</div><div>Someone studying to become a deacon is considered a layperson. Therefore, all rules that apply to preaching and the laity apply to him. The laity do not preach during liturgical services.  
Laity are generally permitted to give spiritual reflections at retreats, prayer meetings, and when bringing Communion to shut-ins.
Canon 766 does permit the laity to occasionally preach in church outside of Mass, but this requires the permission of the bishop, and this permission can only be granted if such an arrangement is necessary.

Can the Non-Ordained Preach?

Just War Theory (JWT) is not a teaching designed to justify hostile actions against another country. It exists to help us preserve as many goods as possible when states have failed to promote, preserve, and defend peace. After all, our Lord did not say, “Blessed are the war-makers.” Rather, his injunction to all of us is to gift to others the very gift of peace that he breathed upon the disciples at Pentecost. “Blessed are the peacemakers.”
To understand JWT, it has to be framed properly. We have to understand that it is one means by which the common good can be preserved. This is why the provisions of JWT all focus on the preservation of some corporate good that aids the flourishing of the individuals within belligerent nations. It is not a way to give cover to those who would make war for the sake of some personal or corporate end that is either hidden or merely self-serving. The goods sought must include those with whom war is being made. Yes! Even in war, you are required to love your enemies.
In our attempt to accomplish this moral expectation we evaluate three stages of warfare: ius ad bellum, ius in bello, and ius post bellum. 
Most of people’s energy is spent discussing the justice of going to war (ius ad bellum). However, the manner in which war is prosecuted (ius in bello) and how belligerent states deport themselves following hostilities (ius post bellum) are also of grave concern. Each of these “parts” of warfare is treated as morally distinct. This is important, because in the past, some atrocities were committed against soldiers or civilians of one country by another due to a consensus that the ius ad bellum of the former’s nation was illicit.
Separating each of these parts allows us to preserve more common and individual goods than it does by creating inextricable causal links among them. Put simply, if you were fighting on the side of an unjust aggressor, you do not lose your right to be treated fairly. In other words, you cannot be summarily executed simply because you fought on the wrong side. However, there remain some connections. One example is that it becomes the responsibility of the victorious nation to aid the rehabilitation of the defeated nation. Generally speaking, there is some relationship among these three parts of warfare, but it is also limited. Both the connections and limitations are subordinated to the promotion of the common good.
In our time, it seems as if certain nations, particularly the so-called “superpowers” of the world, are perpetually in all three stages of war. The world has become significantly smaller since Cicero, Augustine, or Aquinas treated the matter. Even Vittoria or Grotius could not fathom the manner in which power is projected in our time.
For them, warfare was fairly straightforward. It involved the overt movement of troops to a border, invasion, the manifest destruction of a nation’s goods or properties, or some clear excess of a tyrant against his own people. Today, however, belligerence is not so clear.
Setting aside the obfuscating terms that are often used today, presumably for legal rather than moral reasons, JWT considers all of these under the classical definition of war. We can observe this by how recent scholars, such as Michael Walzer, GEM Anscombe, and John Finnis, have included non-standard forms of conflict into their own analysis of the matter. But among nations, the reasons to engage in war and the means to prosecute it are ever evolving. If we are attentive to the real world, then our analysis of what constitutes a just war must grow and develop in step.
It is also important to understand that when the term “Just War” is used, not everyone is talking, precisely, about the same thing. Those who rely on Augustine or Aquinas may not accept the conclusions of Vittoria, Grotius, Walzer, Finnis, or others. Those who rely on modern thinkers may not accept the premises upon which classical considerations of Just War are established. Even the Catechism of the Catholic Church does not represent the totality of thought within the academy (whether Catholic or not) on the matter. For instance, it departs from classical thought (and some modern thought) on the possibility of punitive war, expansion, and preventative actions. It expresses a position that war is always to be defensive in nature. However, this unnecessarily excludes many segments of the debate that may hobble important modern considerations of warfare.
We have to be able to ask:
<ul>
<li>“Can prevention of the development and proliferation of nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons be a just reason for engaging in warfare?”</li>
<li>“Is a cyber-attack targeting the Linux kernel, which would grant unfettered access to worldwide defense and infrastructure assets, as nearly happened in 2016, an act of war?”</li>
<li>“How do we deal with proxy wars?”</li>
<li>“Does funding terrorism constitute an act of war?”</li>
</ul>
Certainly, as Catholics, we must reject any form of utilitarian or consequentialist justifications. However, answering these sorts of questions is precisely what is necessary today. Most of the wars that we see are billed as preventative or even punitive (consider the current action in Iran and the recent action against Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela by the United States). Both types of actions could be allowed according to the thought of Vittoria, but not, it would seem, of Finnis.
There are at least two hidden variables that affect the way in which JWT is treated by different scholars. The first is the definition one may be using for “international law.” The second is the definition used for “natural law.” It is unclear if these terms, used by various authors, are the same, or even similar. For instance, it is not clear that the New Natural Law theories proposed by Finnis easily comport with traditional notions. Related to this confusion is the definition of international law and who is the arbiter of such a body of law, written or unwritten. Even something that should be clear—“who can authorize war”—is a subject of dispute. These are just some of the questions that cause significant debate among scholars and pundits.
One strategy to navigate this labyrinth is to focus on the primary intent of JWT: to preserve and promote the common good. At its heart is the ardent concern for human flourishing. It is obvious that the state of chaos warfare causes does not immediately provide for that. This is true of any conflict, even if it is merely defending oneself against an aggressor.
However, warfare, defensive, punitive, or otherwise, can only possibly be justified if the common good is under threat. Consider the classical position that one sovereign may have an obligation, assuming other necessary conditions are met, to invade a tyrant’s land to bring that tyrant to justice. This is because the care of the common good extends beyond one’s own borders to the whole of humanity. Those tasked with the care of the common good must take the universal brotherhood of man into consideration.
On this account, JWT cannot champion nationalism. However, it is also not a license to wantonly invade lands. There must be a reasonable hope of success, legal authorization, a consideration of proportional effects, etc., if there is to be a just cause for war. Honest diplomacy, economic sanctions, and other tools of statecraft must precede any military action.
Heads of state must always keep in view the axiom that peace is always preferable to war. Peace through strength cannot be accompanied by a heavy trigger finger. Rather, and this may seem odd to many readers, the decision to go to war must stem from a love of one’s neighbor, along with the just defense of oneself and those under his care. It must not stem from fear, a desire for vengeance, or merely some foreseen threat. It must seek to restore justice, promote peace, limit harm, provide for stability, and secure all of the necessary goods to aid the flourishing of the people. To depart from this disposition and these ends is to depart from right reason, sound morals, and the laws of God.

Just War in the Modern World

Leviticus is an uncommon choice for the Mass lectionary, but today’s selection has a direct connection with the Gospel story about the healing of a leper.
To understand something of this man’s situation, we have to understand the status of leprosy in ancient Israel. It was more than just a neurological disease affecting one’s outward appearance; it represented a necessary break from common life, including the life of worship in the Temple. To be a leper was a tragic, isolating experience. As such, it has often been viewed as a symbol of sin—not that, even in ancient Israel, it was viewed as a moral affliction in itself, but its infectious disfigurement is a profound analogy for the way that sin disfigures the human person and cuts him off from fellowship with God and neighbor.
To think about leprosy in this way leads us to wonder if there is some modern equivalent or analogy. Progressive Christians have a habit of asserting that this is how we ought to think about morally objectionable states of life. We should get rid of this concept of “uncleanness” once and for all, they say, privileging instead a concept of unconditional welcome and acceptance. So we have even very high-ranking prelates who cannot be bothered to describe things as moral or immoral; we have only regular and irregular, as if the habitual practice of mortal sin should be imagined as no more significant than filling out the wrong form at the DMV.
The trouble with this view is twofold. First, even if leprosy itself wasn’t morally objectionable, it was still dangerous. St. Damien of Molokai’s death in 1889, as what we sometimes call a “martyr of charity,” is a testament to the fact that leprosy is no joke; he knew quite well that the leper colony in Hawaii needed and deserved his love and pastoral care, but I don’t think he ever imagined that this made him safe. Second, if we look to the example of our Lord, his response to leprosy, more than once, isn’t to say, “Oh, hey, you’re fine as you are, go and be well!” No, he heals the disease. Indeed, in our story today, he asks the healed man to follow the procedures of the law to make sure he is reconciled to the community through the judgment of the priest.
So I think we should be wary of associating leprosy too closely with any modern controversial state of life. Surely the closest thing, in practical terms, is our recent memory of COVID. There we faced a culture of “clean” and “unclean” in more ways than one. Although no one that I can think of ever labeled the virus as a moral sickness, it became in many places an adjacent moral issue. In other words, the decision to wear a mask or not became a sign, depending on whom you were with, of you being on the side of the good guys or the bad guys. People were shunned or publicly pilloried for either their lack of seriousness about the virus or their overreaction to it.
And I think what we saw—and, frankly, what we still see—with COVID is symptomatic of a broader culture that defines itself in terms of “clean” and “unclean.” We don’t use those words. No one wants to really use those words, even if we use various other words that mean the same thing. But the ideology of “taint” is all over the place.
There is a difference between a principled objection to a thing and thinking that seeing it, or being near it without throwing a fit, is somehow sinful. Never mind that a lot of people think they do not believe in sin. But seeing something, being able to process it and understand why it is bad, or worthy of our pity, is part of the moral development of us and our children. And this is where I think our Lord—and, again, St. Damien—can show us that there is a way of being compassionate without denying the presence of something evil, whether it’s natural disease or immorality. The leper needs healing. What some of our modern interlocutors do not seem to grasp is that the leper approaches Jesus with this specific desire. He doesn’t want Jesus to just affirm him as he is. He wants to be made whole.
The whole concept of healing—wanting it, requesting it, lacking it—requires a rational order in which there really are intrinsic goods that should be valued. The principal reason that some of the big popular causes—like “reproductive health” or “<a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/women-men-means-and-ends">gender-affirming care</a>”—are so false is that their concept of good and healing are completely cut off from any objective content apart from what an individual perceives to be good and real. Modern popular medicine would, if it were at all consistent with itself, demand that we “affirm” the leper and treat his disease as simply one equally valid approach to the human nervous system; we might as well go to the next stage and “affirm” the neo-Nazi who thinks that all races other than his own should be annihilated. That we are not allowed to make these comparisons in public without weeping and gnashing of teeth is a testament to our chronic inability as a culture to be rational.
St. Paul tells us that we should avoid giving offense. He also tells us to imitate him as he imitates Christ, and neither he nor Christ is exactly known for never having offended anyone. So this isn’t some blanket theology of niceness, as if all disagreements can be solved by a frozen casserole and a nonverbal like on Facebook. He has to mean something, though. Let’s not take the easy way out and imagine that his words are completely without challenge for us. The key goal isn’t niceness for its own sake, but the greater end of saving souls.
Above, I painted a picture of nonrepentance — symbolized by the leper who thinks leprosy is the new normal. That can be disturbing, to say the least, and it’s fair to say that we’re bombarded with this attitude on a daily basis, whether from politicians or celebrities or people we see at school or work or the grocery store. But it’s not the whole picture. The fact that there are some loud lepers out there demanding that we all celebrate Leprosy Pride Month doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of others who think this is all nonsense and want the grace of God to help them in their struggle, whatever it is.
This in particular is where we need to take Paul’s advice, and our Lord’s example, seriously. Maybe we aren’t all called to go, like St. Damien of Molokai, to live in the leper colony. But we meet all sorts of people, people whom popular culture would want us to categorize and sort into clean and unclean, our sort of people or not our sort of people. That’s nonsense, too, because our sort of people, according Paul just a little earlier in 1 Corinthians, include “the immoral, idolaters, adulterers, sexual perverts, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, and robbers.” That’s quite the list, but, says the Apostle, “Such were some of you” (1 Cor 6:9-11). Emphasis on were, because the point of the passage is that these behaviors have no place in the kingdom of God. But we all have to start somewhere, and usually the best place to start is where we are.
Perhaps that’s where I should end, too: with a reminder that all these thoughts on lepers aren’t just about “us” and “them.” Sure, we need to think carefully about how to follow our Lord’s proclamation of the good news. But we always have to remember to hear that call ourselves. What healing do I need? Do I even recognize the places where I need healing?
As we head into Lent, there’s really no time like the present for a checkup. And let the healing of the sacraments help us all to better meet the world’s hurting people and bring them to Jesus.

Daily Holy Mass: Monday, May 4, 2020

<h2>The Case</h2>
Stan filled the fireplace and lit the oak logs to make the living room cozy for the arriving guests. The Bible study had been announced at Mass, and now suddenly it was here. Stan and Suzie had been Catholics all their lives, but they had never really studied the Bible for themselves, so this was a new venture for them. They had just come home from work and had a few moments to wolf down last night’s leftovers and send the kids to the neighbors’ before prepping the living room.
They both hoped everything would go well. Since Catholics are generally uninterested in the Bible, they didn’t expect many to attend.
The doorbell rang. As Stan stepped toward the door, he noticed his large crucifix on the wall and quickly decided to take it down and set it behind the couch. He didn’t want to offend the guests.
Greetings were extended, and the guests settled into their seats. They had an interesting mix of participants. More than half were from the parish, but there were also a Presbyterian couple, a young woman who had left the Catholic Church, and a “non-denominational” couple.
Stan and Suzie thought a good mix of religious backgrounds was good. The pope had encouraged ecumenical activity, so they wanted several Christian traditions represented to keep the study balanced, ecumenical, and open-minded.
Stan started: “We haven’t had much time to prepare for this study, but I hope it’ll go well. As agreed, we’re all going to use the same translation so we can all be on the same page, so to speak. We’ll use only the Bible, avoiding other materials so the Holy Spirit can lead us.” Everyone agreed. Bible study should be fresh and open-minded—unhindered by “dogma” and denominational trappings.
Suzie had earlier removed the Catechism from the coffee table. She and Stan had also removed the crucifixes from the wall and the statue of Mary on the shelf to avoid any offense to the non-Catholics.
Without further ado, they all opened to the Gospel of St. John. “Who would like to read the first verse? Okay, Richard, go ahead.” Richard read, and everyone smiled. Stan cleared his throat. “Well, who would like to begin? What does this passage mean to you? Let’s keep it simple and not offend anyone by being too opinionated. Sarah, why don’t you begin? How do you feel about this verse?”
Sarah shared her impressions of the passage, and everyone followed in turn. Another verse was read, and again they went around the room to discover what each person felt about it.
Time just flew, and before they knew it, they had discussed the whole first chapter of St. John’s Gospel.
Everyone ate his coffee cake, and then the study ended. Stan thanked all of the guests for coming as Suzie retrieved their coats. Stan and Suzie shut the door behind the last guest, hung the crucifix back on the wall, and put the Catechism back on the table. Without a doubt, they felt that the Bible study had been a great success.
<h2>The Investigation</h2>
Grab your detective hat and magnifying glass, and let’s see how many fatal flaws you can find.

<li>How should Stan and Suzie have prepared for the Bible study (2 Tim. 2:15)? Was creating a cozy atmosphere adequate preparation for a study of Scripture? Did they pray at the start or close of the Bible study (Ps. 119:17-19, CCC 2653-54)? Was the Sign of the Cross invoked (CCC 2157)?</li>

<li>How did they misunderstand the Church’s teaching on ecumenism (CCC 816)? Is being non-offensive to people’s denominational sentiments the primary goal of a Bible study (Titus 1:9)? Are a good feeling and smiling faces proof of a successful Bible study (2 Tim. 4:3)? Should Catholics set aside their Catholic faith in order to “get along” with others in a Catholic Bible study (John 6:60-61, 66; Acts 20:27)?</li>

You WILL NOT find the CANON in SCRIPTURE ALONE!

In September I had the privilege of attending the 2024 Catholic Answers Conference where I heard talks by many of my favorite apologists like Joe Heschmeyer, Trent Horn, and Cy Kellett. A recurring theme across their talks was how to do proper apologetics. Specifically, they emphasized that good apologetics centers more on <a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/winning-the-person-not-the-argument">conversations than arguments</a>. This is because the Catholic faith is not just one of many philosophies that can be proven by debate, but the most transformative and fundamental truth we can encounter.
It is tempting, especially online, to reduce the faith to a series of talking points and proofs. Since it is now possible to speak to hundreds of new people a day about the faith, it becomes easy to use the same spiel about why this or that person should become Catholic. The apologist makes a checklist in his mind about topics to cover: baptism, the Eucharist, apostolic succession, sola scriptura, and the like. He checks this box and that box, and expects the other person to convert upon hearing the logical arguments just provided. 
But the truth is that conversion begins with the heart, not the mind. Only someone that has <a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/blog/answer-endless-objections-with-this-one-weird-trick">opened his heart to God</a> will allow himself to freely hear the truth about the faith. By treating the faith as the subject of a mere intellectual debate—and not the true transformative belief that it is—the apologist forgets the need for the assistance of grace and the Holy Spirit in apologetics. 

Not only is this type of apologetics ultimately ineffective, but it also leads to serious repercussions for the apologist. Each new non-Catholic he encounters is reduced to a subject to receive a checklist of arguments. The apologist no longer perceives him as a fellow sinner in need of God’s grace but as an adversary to intellectually conquer. Scripture is no longer the living, inspired word of God but simply a collection of prooftexts to wield against non-Catholics. The Church is no longer the bride of Christ but is simply an institution of great historical proof and significance.
Throughout my time in online apologetics, I have had to take multiple breaks to re-center myself after falling into these errors. I knew I had crossed a line once I noticed that I couldn’t interact with non-Catholics without being overcome by thoughts of how to prove the truth of the Catholic faith to them. Instead of allowing God’s grace and the Holy Spirit to work in their hearts, I felt the burden of proving everything to everyone. 
So what do we do if we find ourselves inside this same trap? We must look back to the greatest Catholic apologist: Jesus Christ. Jesus debated with others—often in Socratic fashion by asking a series of questions to his opponents. This approach served to reveal the wisdom of Christ and the truth behind his ministry, leading to the conversion of many sinners. Certainly, then, debate has its place in apologetics and conversion.
However, Christ’s ministry did not consist solely of debate. Many of his most healing and transformative interactions came not as a result of debate but of mercy, compassion, and love. This should always be at the heart of apologetics: not simply giving the “right answer” to religious questions, but giving hope and mercy in a world filled with hopelessness and condemnation. Only then can true, long-lasting conversions take place.

Don’t Reduce Faith to Arguments

Caller: Yeah. Being a Canadian, it can never be a Catholic or a Christian just for the fact of the way North America was kind of stolen and the persecution that the Native Americans suffered when the Christians and Catholics came here by the millions and took their land.
Trent Horn: What do you, what do you mean that, by that, do you mean when people settled here two or 300 years ago, you wouldn&#8217;t, you can&#8217;t adopt the belief they have now because of their actions back then?

Trent Horn: you, yeah. Okay, would you. So I&#8217;m also guessing you wouldn&#8217;t belong to any Native American tribe that stole land from another tribe. Well, I am part Native. Native American there, but you are. Okay. Have Native American tribes ever taken land from other tribes? I&#8217;m sure they have, yeah. Okay, does that prove that everything they believe in their tribe is false?
Caller: Well, yeah, but Native people, you know, kind of came here for tens of thousands of years and then the Christians and Catholics, that is the Europeans came by the millions.
Trent Horn: Right. Well, so, so Randy. Overran their lands. Right. So Randy, what it seems to be is that, you know, 10,000 years ago there was a land bridge. Then people from Asia came here to North America. Various tribes engaged with one another, sometimes peacefully, sometimes not peacefully. Then you had European settlers that came here that engaged with these tribes, sometimes peacefully, sometimes not peacefully. But to me it doesn&#8217;t seem like the actions of someone in the past prove whether what someone believes now or the belief system as a whole is false or not. You know, for example, whatever settlers did 300 years ago, like when it comes to the question of just being a Christian, that doesn&#8217;t prove whether Jesus rose from the dead or not. Right. So what do you identify? What is your belief system? Now? How would you describe yourself?
Caller: Well, I&#8217;m not a believer in any faith area.
Trent Horn: Okay, well what would it take for you? So do you believe in God? No. Okay, so right off the bat, well, you know, why don&#8217;t you believe like the existence of God doesn&#8217;t depend on Christian behavior in, you know, in a certain context. So why don&#8217;t you believe in God? Well, that&#8217;s. Well, because there&#8217;s so many and it&#8217;s all human beliefs there. But again, it gets back to how the Native Americans were treated. Right? The so called Gods, God forbid, people came here by the millions and pushed them off their lands and there&#8217;s a trail of tears. Okay, well Randy, let&#8217;s assume, I think that&#8217;s a more complicated scenario you&#8217;re making it out to, but let&#8217;s just assume that you&#8217;re right, that Christians acted horribly 300 years ago. Can a bad person still believe true things? Okay, I&#8217;m just asking you a question. Can a bad person still actually have true beliefs?
Caller: Sure.
Trent Horn: Okay. Should we have true beliefs? We as in who? You and I? Should we try to make sure that what we believe is true? Well, yeah. And I believe there&#8217;s no God, so I know I&#8217;m right. You believe there is. So how do you do?
Caller: Sure.
Caller: And then I want to ask you about that. How do you know there is no God? How do you know that?
Caller: Well, it&#8217;s. It. It&#8217;s. Man made
Trent Horn: Okay, but you&#8217;re just saying the same thing again. You&#8217;re saying, I believe there&#8217;s no God because God was made up, which is the same as saying there is no God because there is no God. Where&#8217;s your evidence? Okay, well, I&#8217;m pretty sure I haven&#8217;t seen a God or you haven&#8217;t seen a God, you know, so. Okay, you may. You can&#8217;t see God because he&#8217;s immaterial, but you can know God exists based upon effects in the world. So, for example, if a. Let&#8217;s say a car showed up in your driveway with a card in the windshield wiper and it says, you know, happy birthday, would you say that someone gave you that car or that it just kind of popped into existence from nothing? Sure. Somebody built it and somebody gave it to me. Okay. Why would you think that? Well, because it&#8217;s in your yard. Right. And it&#8217;s not just going to pop. You know, things don&#8217;t just pop into existence from nothing like that. Sure. So the same. So the same would be true for the universe. If we have scientific evidence and also we have philosophical evidence that the universe came into existence, there was nothing, and now there&#8217;s a universe, which is much more impressive than a car that came into existence, you know, 13, 14 billion years ago, Then shouldn&#8217;t we apply that same logic and say, hey, there&#8217;s a cause behind this, something greater than the universe itself? So where would God come from? Obviously, somebody must have created God. Well, that intuition of yours is helpful. You&#8217;re saying, so if something exists, it needs a cause. So that shows us the universe has got to have a cause. Now, what if I asked you this question? Let&#8217;s say there&#8217;s a bunch of boxcars going down a train, right? In order for a boxcar to go down a train track, what has to pull it? Well, locomotive. Okay, but what&#8217;s pulling the locomotive? Well, an engine, right? What&#8217;s making the engine go? So my point Here with the analogy is when you ask the question, who made God? That&#8217;s sort of like asking what&#8217;s pulling the locomotive. God is very different from the universe, just like the locomotive is different from the boxcar. That if something exists or it moves and it changes, or we need a reason to explain that. But our reasons, we just can&#8217;t have an infinite number of reasons. Because in the end, if you have an infinite number of reasons, this did this, then this, and this and this, and there&#8217;s an infinite chain, you actually don&#8217;t explain anything at all. Instead, you need some kind of ultimate explanation that is the cause of everything, but itself is not cause. And that&#8217;s kind of the fundamental argument for the existence of God. So. So I tell you what, Randy, we&#8217;re going to have to go to a break here soon. I’m Not Catholic Because I’m Canadian…

When it comes to the Protestant doctrine of sola scriptura (Scripture as the only rule of faith), Catholics must remember: the first Christians did not have a Bible to call their only rule of faith!
The last book of the New Testament, Revelation, was not written until about the year A.D. 68. That leaves a thirty-five-year gap between Jesus’ ascension and the completion of the Bible as we know it. Can an incomplete Bible be the sole rule of faith?
Furthermore, if the doctrine of sola scriptura were true, then the Church would have existed for a time without its sole infallible rule of faith. During this time, there would have been controversies, doctrinal disputes, and other difficulties that could not be resolved. On the individual level, believers would have lacked the fullness of divine revelation. Both of these facts demonstrate a fatal flaw in the doctrine of sola scriptura.
[A note on Gospel dating: Some modern scholars assign a date of A.D. 90-100 for the Book of Revelation. But in the informed opinion of this author, the earlier dates given by Jimmy Akin and other Bible scholars are more trustworthy. Moreover, if the later date is accurate, it would mean that the Church existed even longer without the New Testament as the final authority, thus weakening the Protestant position even further.]
The first few decades of the Church’s existence were turbulent. Persecutions had already begun, and more were imminent (Matt. 10:16-18, Luke 21:12, John 15:20-21, 2 Tim. 3:11-12, Rev. 2:10). Believers were being martyred (Acts 7:54-60, 12:1-2). The apostolic teaching was met with resistance (Acts 5:17-18, 27-28; 17:5-6, 13), and false teachings had already appeared (Acts 20:29-30, Gal. 1:6-9, 1 John 4:1). If the Bible was the Christian’s only rule of faith at that time, and if the Bible was not fully written, by the earliest reckoning, until decades after Christ’s ascension, how did early Christians deal with immediate threats to the new faith?
The New Testament answers this question. In Acts 15, we read about the Council of Jerusalem. The issue at hand was whether a believer had to be circumcised according to the Mosaic Law in order to be saved (v. 1). Luke tells us that “Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them”—that is, those who were insisting on circumcision—but since the issue was still not settled, these two men were sent to Jerusalem to confer with the apostles and presbyters to put it to rest. “After there had been much debate,” Peter stands up and delivers his ruling on the matter (vv. 7-11), after which “all the assembly kept silence.”
This is a telling account, because conspicuously present is Peter’s teaching authority, and conspicuously absent is an appeal to Scripture. In fact, those in favor of circumcision were the ones appealing to Scripture (vv. 1, 5), but Peter overruled them on the basis of his own power to teach on matters of faith. The Magisterium functioned exactly as Jesus had designed it to.
At this point in the life of the Church, none of the New Testament had been written yet. But there were still Christians who wanted authoritative Christian truth, who wanted to be saved. God didn’t abandon them as casualties of a sola scriptura system that wouldn’t be functional until long after they were dead. It doesn’t seem reasonable, therefore, to think that even after Jesus revealed the fullness of the Father’s plan, imparted his teachings to the apostles, and established his Church to be the means by which those teachings were brought to the world, there would be one group of people who lacked a rule of faith (no New Testament) and another group, much later, who had it once the New Testament was complete.
A Protestant might object: “Christians necessarily had to wait until the completion of the New Testament. The apostles may have been the authority during that time, but once the New Testament was written and the Bible was complete, it replaced the apostles as the only rule of faith for believers.”
And here is how a Catholic can respond: “This claim is pure supposition and has no support in the New Testament. Aren’t the important teachings of Scripture—like what transpires in the Council of Jerusalem, where the apostles demonstrate their binding authority—sufficiently clear, as Protestants claim? If sola scriptura is a central doctrine, why would it be based on inference at best and supposition at worst rather than being explicitly stated in Scripture?”
Faced with the time gap between the Ascension and the completion of the New Testament, Protestants are left with three possibilities regarding temporary sources of Christian authority for that period: (1) nothing, (2) the Old Testament, or (3) the apostles.
Of course, having nothing as a rule of faith for Christians is untenable. It contradicts the passages where Jesus clearly gives his authority to the apostles, it leaves the Church vulnerable to the kinds of difficulties mentioned above, and it leaves no court of final appeal to settle the Church’s internal and disciplinary matters.
The Old Testament by itself cannot serve as the rule of faith because it needs to be interpreted, as evidenced by the scenario just mentioned in Acts 15—or Luke 24, where Jesus has to explain to the two disciples walking to Emmaus “the things concerning himself” in “all the [Old Testament] scriptures” (v. 27) as well as to the disciples in Jerusalem (vv. 44-45). It functioned alongside the Jews’ tradition and the seat of Moses, showing that in practice, it was not a sole authority. And if it were sufficient for Christians, then the New Testament would not have needed to be written.
That leaves us with apostolic authority. Nowhere does the Bible indicate that it would be temporary—still less that it would give way to the authority of Scripture alone. On the contrary, we see that the apostles chose successors, who, in turn, possessed the same authority to “bind and loose” (render authoritative decisions) that they had. This is why Matthias was elected as a replacement for Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:15-26) and why Paul passed on his apostolic authority to Timothy and Titus (2 Tim. 1:6, Titus 1:5). If anything, pointing to the apostles to solve the authority gap supports the Catholic position: since Jesus intended his Church to exist until his return, he intended apostolic authority (the Church’s Magisterium) to exist, as clearly evidenced by the selection of successors to their office.

Christians with No Bible!

Traditionally, the Catholic Church has not endorsed “<a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240919_nota-esperienza-medjugorje_en.html">the spiritual experience</a>” of a place of pilgrimage without at the same time confirming the supernatural character of the <a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/print-edition/twelve-things-to-know-about-private-revelations">alleged private revelations</a> associated with the shrine—stating, for example, that the apparitions reported by a seer is worthy of belief. But the Medjugorje saga, whose origins date to June 1981 in former Yugoslavia, <a href="https://www.catholic.com/qa/the-churchs-current-position-on-medjugorje">has long defied ecclesiastical convention</a>, and indeed <a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/blog/fast-turnarounds-on-apparitions">helped shape</a> <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240517_norme-fenomeni-soprannaturali_en.html">new discernment norms</a>, which permit the Church to recognize and encourage good fruits linked to reported private revelations without pronouncing on the revelations themselves.
In short, the <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240919_nota-esperienza-medjugorje_en.html">Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF)</a>—with the approval of Pope Francis—has made what can be termed <a href="https://www.vaticannews.va/en/vatican-city/news/2024-09/pope-francis-ddf-note-nulla-osta-approval-medjugorje-devotion.html">a Solomonic decision</a>: affirming that Jesus Christ and his Blessed Mother have wrought great fruit in the lives of more than forty million pilgrims over forty years, without deciding on whether the Virgin Mary has actually been daily appearing to six reported visionaries during that same period, and thereby not overturning the negative judgments by <a href="https://www.catholic.com/qa/the-churchs-current-position-on-medjugorje">two previous bishops</a> of the Diocese of Mostar-Duvno in the nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
<blockquote>The uniqueness of the place lies in the large number of such fruits: abundant conversions, a frequent return to the sacraments (particularly, the Eucharist and Reconciliation), many vocations to priestly, religious, and married life, a deepening of the life of faith, a more intense practice of prayer, many reconciliations between spouses, and the renewal of marriage and family life. It should be noted that such experiences occur above all in the context of pilgrimages to the places associated with the original events rather than in meetings with the “visionaries” to be present for the alleged apparitions (3, emphasis added). . . .
While this does not imply a declaration of the supernatural character of the phenomenon in question (cf. <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240517_norme-fenomeni-soprannaturali_en.html">Norms, art. 22, §2</a>)—and recalling that the faithful are not obliged to believe in it—the Nihil obstat [nothing obstructs] indicates that the faithful can receive a positive encouragement for their Christian life through this spiritual proposal, and it authorizes public acts of devotion. Such a determination is possible insofar as many positive fruits have been noted in the midst of a spiritual experience, while negative and dangerous effects have not spread among the People of God (38).</blockquote>
In doing so, the Church reaffirms that God is sovereign and therefore can write straight with the proverbial crooked lines of mankind: “A man’s mind plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps&#8221; (Prov. 16:9). That is, despite the imperfections of his disciples, God can bring good fruit in any case where the faithful sincerely respond to his spiritual promptings. Or, as St. Paul says, “We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose” (Rom. 8:28).
In effect, <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240919_nota-esperienza-medjugorje_en.html">in its new document</a>—“‘The Queen of Peace’: Note About the Spiritual Experience Connected with Medjugorje”—Pope Francis and the DDF have also <a href="https://www.catholic.com/qa/the-churchs-current-position-on-medjugorje">affirmed the counsel</a> Catholic Answers has long provided to pilgrims devoted to phenomena whose supernatural character has not been confirmed:
<blockquote>Those who have experienced conversions—or a deepening of faith—associated with pilgrimage(s) to Medjugorje should know that the validity of their experiences does not hinge upon whether the reported apparitions are declared of supernatural origin. Indeed, the sacraments are valid at Medjugorje, and the Blessed Mother can—and does—fruitfully intercede for those who seek her sincerely, wherever that may be.</blockquote>
In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI set up a commission to study the Medjugorje phenomena. The commission’s report, submitted to then Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) in 2014, was favorably disposed because of “<a href="https://kevinsymonds.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/murgia-ruini-dossier-enpolished_1.2.pdf">the attestation of multiple Gospel fruits</a>,” and so appeared to lay the groundwork for the DDF’s approval of devotion to the “<a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240919_nota-esperienza-medjugorje_en.html">spiritual experience</a>” associated with Medjugorje.
The Church’s new discernment norms, <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240517_norme-fenomeni-soprannaturali_en.html">which the DDF approved in May 2024</a>, give the Holy See the final word in evaluating reported private revelations and related devotion, in contrast to traditional discipline that deferred to the judgment of the local diocesan bishop. These norms replace those <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_19780225_norme-apparizioni_en.html">established by Pope St. Paul VI in 1978</a>. In issuing the new norms, the DDF stated, “It became evident that decisions took an excessively long time, sometimes spanning several decades. In this way, the necessary ecclesiastical discernment often came too late.”
Nevertheless, the DDF provides that local bishops <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240919_nota-esperienza-medjugorje_en.html">retain spiritual oversight</a> on devotion to Medjugorje in their respective dioceses:
<blockquote>Although there may be different opinions about the authenticity of some facts or certain aspects of this spiritual experience, the ecclesiastical authorities of the places where it is present are invited to “appreciate the pastoral value of this spiritual proposal, and even to promote its spread” (Norms, par. 17). However, the power of each Diocesan Bishop to assess prudently what is happening in his own territory and to make his own decision on the matter remains firmly in place (cf. Norms, art. 7, §3). While the positive fruits of this spiritual phenomenon are widely spread throughout the world, this does not deny that there may be groups or persons who, by misusing this spiritual phenomenon, act in a mistaken way. Each Diocesan Bishop, in his own Diocese, has the freedom and authority to make the prudential decisions he deems necessary for the good of the People of God (40).</blockquote>
The DDF concluded with <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240919_nota-esperienza-medjugorje_en.html">wise spiritual counsel</a> for Medjugorje pilgrims, as well as for anyone else who otherwise seeks to serve the Lord and his Blessed Mother:
<blockquote>In any case, may the people who go to Medjugorje be strongly advised that pilgrimages are not made to meet with alleged visionaries but to have an encounter with Mary, the Queen of Peace, and—faithful to her love for her Son—to encounter Christ and listen to him through meditation on the Word, by participation in the Eucharist, and in Eucharistic Adoration, as happens in so many shrines spread all over the world in which the Virgin Mary is venerated with the most varied titles (41).</blockquote>

A Primer on Medjugorje

Jimmy Akin briefly discusses the historicity behind the Pharisees and whether there were any female members, or wives of male members, in their ranks.

Were There Any Female Pharisees?

Last month, the <a href="https://opeast.org/2024/11/st-thomas-aquinas-on-tour/">Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph</a> announced that “St. Thomas Aquinas is making his first ever U.S. tour 750 years after his death.” But surely <a href="https://www.newadvent.org/summa/1075.htm#article4">St. Thomas would object</a> that this isn’t strictly accurate, since “it belongs to the notion of man to be composed of soul, flesh, and bones,” and it’s only his skull that is touring the United States as a relic, while his soul enjoys the yet-greater glory of Heaven.
And notably, it’s only his skull on tour, while other parts of his body are on display in churches across Italy (and beyond). There’s a bone from his left arm in his old priory in San Domenico Maggiore, a rib bone at the cathedral in his hometown of Aquino, and so forth. Such news raises a natural objection: isn’t it hypocritical for the Church to forbid Catholics from having their cremated ashes scattered, and then “scatter” the body parts of the saints around the world?
But this objection misses the mark. As the (then-Congregation, now) Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith explained back in 2016, there are a few reasons why the Church prohibits the scattering of ashes. One is to remind us that “by death the soul is separated from the body, but in the resurrection God will give incorruptible life to our body, transformed by reunion with our soul.” In other words, when we pray in the Creed that we “look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come,” we’re announcing our belief that death isn’t the end. It’s not the end of our existence, and it’s not even the end of our bodily existence. It’s for this reason that we take the body very seriously, even in death. It’s why we want to avoid anything that treats the body in a disrespectful manner, as well as any appearance of us “discarding” our dead bodies.
But there’s a second reason, as well:
<blockquote>The reservation of the ashes of the departed in a sacred place ensures that they are not excluded from the prayers and remembrance of their family or the Christian community. It prevents the faithful departed from being forgotten, or their remains from being shown a lack of respect, which eventuality is possible, most especially once the immediately subsequent generation has too passed away.</blockquote>
You can pray for the faithfully departed wherever you like, but being by their graveside in a cemetery helps to underscore the reality of death and of our hope for the resurrection. If, instead, you scatter the ashes of your loved ones over the water (or worse, <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/disneyland/article/spreading-ashes-shuts-down-disney-rides-19362025.php">in Disneyland</a>), that place is gone.
Contrast this with the example of saints like St. Thomas Aquinas. The relics of the saints are preserved in various churches (and even travel around from church to church) not because we think the body is trivial, but precisely because we know it’s not. The relics of the saints are placed in sacred places, churches, and the faithful can come and ask the saints’ intercession. Instead of having one place dedicated to their body and their memory, a particular saint may have many. But their relics are still strikingly (and to some, unnervingly) bodily. The body isn’t discarded, but remains in its proper place in our prayer and contemplation.
So rather than a contradiction, what we really find is a coherent view of the dignity of the human person and the human body. St. Paul reminds us that “Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Cor. 15:20). As Christ rose bodily from the dead, the saints (not only the canonized, but all of those who die in friendship with God!) will likewise rise bodily from the grave one day. And so we treat our bodies with dignity, even in death, and with a special reverence for the bodies of those who we know to be saints.

Why Relics, but No Scattered Ashes?

<div>I conditionally baptized my infant grandson in the hopes that my daughter would convert and have him baptized. Did I baptize him validly?</div><div>Provided you used water and the valid sacramental form the Church prescribes, namely, baptizing your grandson “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” you validly baptized him. There is also the issue of intending what the Church intends, which is also needed for a valid baptism. Some might argue you didn’t have this intent because you only intended to conditionally baptize him as a protective measure, not actually baptize him.
I don’t think such an argument has merit, because conditional baptism takes place only when there is doubt about whether a person was actually baptized, and so the intention of one who conditionally baptizes is to make sure a person is actually baptized.
The question becomes whether you should have acted unilaterally in baptizing your grandson. In case of danger of death, such a baptism would be morally permissible. In the absence of such a condition, which seems to hold true in your grandson’s case, since you mentioned no serious illness, you should have deferred to the rights of the parents—in this case, your daughter and her husband if she’s married—and then trust in God (see the Catechism 1257-61).
At this point, I would tell your daughter what you did and have a fellow faithful Catholic whom she also greatly respects with you when you do, in case your daughter becomes angry with you. In any event, ask her forgiveness for violating her parental rights but convey you were genuinely looking out for your grandson’s temporal and eternal well-being. Then make it a habit to pray for your grandson and your daughter daily and seek to be a regular part of their lives. Your daughter may want some distance for a while and only want you to interact with her son provided you don’t do anything religious. In that case, quietly pray while you are with him and his mother and trust in God for the long term.

Did I Validly Baptize My Infant Grandson?

<div>May a Catholic lie to keep a secret you don’t want the person asking about to know?</div><div>First off, one is never obliged to tell someone something he has no right to know. On the other hand, we are not permitted to lie. It is sometimes said, &#8220;You may never lie, but you do not always have to tell the truth&#8221;—meaning, of course, that there are some truths you do not have to reveal.
Instead of a lie, one should use some manner of speaking from which the truth cannot be gleaned but which is not literally a lie. This includes some well-accepted social conventions such as, for example, telling a caller that someone is not in or cannot come to the telephone, meaning that he is not available. This spares the feelings of the caller, who does not have the right to know the reason why in any case.
In the case of extreme danger, when dealing with one who obviously has evil intentions, one may use materially misleading speech, but even then one may not lie. Telling the Communist officials that you do not know where the person they are seeking is is not a lie, since their intentions are unjust and they have no right to know; and there is also a sense in which you do not know exactly where the person is in the context of his hiding place. This case does not apply just because we do not want to expose the person to the law, but only in the case where those seeking him have no right to do so.
Remember also that in such difficult cases, where a person is responding immediately to a complex situation without much forethought, that God will surely not judge our efforts harshly, even if we fail somewhat under pressure. Simply put, a lie of convenience in a gravely difficult situation is most likely a venial sin either in itself or from the lack of freedom engendered by the circumstances.

Is It Ever OK to Lie?

When actor Robert Duvall died last Tuesday at the age of ninety-five, the entertainment media responded with widespread accolades. And deserved ones: dubbed the “American Olivier” by one film critic, Duvall’s power and range shined through in some of American cinema’s most celebrated films, including The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, as well as highly-regarded minor masterpieces like Tender Mercies and The Great Santini. (And, if you’re a nerd, THX-1138.)
One of those secondary entries in Duvall’s filmography that deserves top mention but is often overlooked is 1997’s The Apostle. Duvall wrote, directed, and starred in this story of a Protestant pastor who is forced to leave his Texas congregation and re-invent himself as a preacher in a Louisiana bayou town.
The film was a critical success, with special praise given to Duvall’s ability to capture details and diction of Southern Evangelical culture. Moreover, in a refreshing rarity, Duvall’s script never panders, never snarks, never judges its Christian subjects. These are offered at face value, expressing real faith and sincere motives. And their sins and failings are presented not, as Hollywood formula so often makes them, as another proof of Christian phoniness, but just as part of the mosaic of human complexity.
As Duvall <a href="https://guideposts.org/positive-living/entertainment/music/guideposts-classics-robert-duvall-on-faith-and-inspiration/">would later write</a>,
<blockquote>What was most important to me was to make a movie where Christianity was treated on its own terms, with the respect it deserves. Hollywood usually shows preachers as hucksters and hypocrites, and I was sick and tired of that.</blockquote>
Without exception, the actors pay off the script’s intentions: Duvall as the flawed protagonist Sonny; Farrah Fawcett as his conflicted and unfaithful wife; Billy Bob Thornton and Walton Goggins as two very different kinds of converts; indeed, the list of note-perfect performances threatens to include the entire cast.
My love for The Apostle, though, goes beyond its cinematic virtues and its honest treatment of Christianity. I think it’s impossible to watch the film and not be impressed by ways in which it bursts out of its regional Protestant motif and touches rich spiritual themes that a Catholic would find familiar.
WARNING: HERE BEGIN SPOILERS
One of these is a throwaway moment in which Duvall’s character glimpses a Catholic eucharistic procession on a river and remarks approvingly, “You do it your way, and I do it my way, but we get it done.” What may strike some as a false ecumenical note (one review at the time complained that he should be spitting invectives against the Whore of Babylon instead), looks more to me like character development on a theological level. On the run after assaulting his wife’s lover in a drunken rage, having re-christened himself as an “apostle,” Sonny seems to have embraced one of our Lord’s counsels to his apostles: “He who is not against us is for us” (Mark 9:40). He has left behind his cushy, sectarian existence and embraced a broader and purer evangelical fervor.
Another is the meditation on marital fidelity. At first it might seem chauvinistic to call this a Catholic concept, but in an age where all of Protestantism has made peace with divorce and where segments of it increasingly seek to justify or downplay other offenses against marriage or chastity, I think we could very naturally view The Apostle’s treatment of these themes through a Catholic lens.
Sonny begins the film as a psychologically domineering husband who smirks about his “wandering eye” and admits to but downplays being a “womanizer.” Immediately after he beats his wife’s youth-minister (!) paramour and flees the law, he holes up in a tent to fast and repent, in a scene interspersed with a voiceover in which his wife likewise repents of her adultery and expresses a firm purpose of amendment. No therapeutic self-justification here; no revisionism of traditional biblical morality to suit the age.
Later, he finds himself attracted to a young secretary separated from her husband. He flirts with her and, sensing her own attraction to his charisma, begins laying what seems like well-practiced groundwork to seduce her (mixing flattery with spiritual authority in ways we might call predatory). But his pursuit abruptly ends when he spies her and her family, meeting for a possible reconciliation, sitting down in a restaurant where he is working as a line chef. Chastened by the recognition of his pattern of sexual sin and its innocent victims, he immediately quits his job, vowing with pointed double meaning never to “look through that window again.”
Another thematic point that resonates with Catholic viewers is Sonny’s working-out of his salvation. Although he parrots the standard eternal-security doctrine, at one point telling his congregation that “once you’re saved, it’s a done deal,” I can only guess that this is meant to set up an ironic contrast—for his character traces an unmistakable arc of redemption through repentance, good works, and suffering.
Where he had been comfortably ensconced in the health-and-wealth gospel, dancing around his packed suburban Ft. Worth megachurch with a $100 bill held aloft like an idol, Sonny comes to minister to a motley congregation in a rickety abandoned chapel, working menial jobs to make ends meet and to buy radio time to preach. In his free time, he scampers around poor neighborhoods leaving bags of groceries on porch steps, mediates squabbles among his little flock, and plans a marriage retreat to help struggling couples. He doesn’t behave like a man who can rest assured of his salvation, but one who must labor furiously to pay for his sins.
Sonny has embraced poverty and chastity; just obedience remains. Despite having ostensibly already been “saved,” and despite his repentance, conversion, and good works, it turns out that he still must pay back the very last penny. Finally arrested for his crime—he submits without a fight, after delivering a farewell sermon and handing over his gold watch as a last offering—he is last seen on a chain gang, scything weeds and leading his fellow prisoners in a litany to the name of Jesus. He will be saved, but only as through fire.
What about Duvall himself? Though he seemed by all accounts to be a decent fellow, by modern Hollywood standards even a reactionary—grounded, patriotic, ruggedly normal—there isn’t much indication that he sought salvation through conventional faith or religion. But could his art in some way foster friendship with God? He <a href="https://guideposts.org/positive-living/entertainment/music/guideposts-classics-robert-duvall-on-faith-and-inspiration/">recounts an experience</a>, while doing research for The Apostle at a Baptist church, that “moved” him and made him feel “connected to the Lord.”
“Without warning,” he says, “something awakened within me that had always been there, dormant and untouched until that day. It was the greatest discovery I ever made.”

<div>What Evidence for Objective Morality Can I Give to an Athiest? </div><div>You can point to our common human nature, that despite coming from various socio-economic backgrounds and cultures, human beings manifest that there is a common law of God written on our hearts, i.e., our consciences (see Rom. 2:14-16), that we can know basic right from wrong precisely because we’re human.
For example, even though they likely made themselves vulnerable to great physical punishment from radical Muslim men in Egypt, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/cbs-reporter-lara-logan-discusses-sexual-assault-cairo/story?id=13504974">Muslim women wearing burkas interceded to save the life of a CBS reporter who had been sexually assaulted by a mob</a>. Based on their culture and religion that sometimes can be expressed in extreme ways, some might have expected these Muslim women to join in the beating of this “infidel woman,” or at least step away for fear of reprisals from the many menacing Muslim men gathered, especially later on when the Western media would not be around to report on their punishment. Instead, like the Good Samaritan who acted more righteously than a couple of devout Jewish leaders despite his (the Samaritan&#8217;s) espousing some heretical religious beliefs (Luke 10:25-37), these women illustrated that we are all made in God’s image and likeness (Gen. 1:26-27) and thus are capable of knowing and choosing right from wrong, including doing so in courageous circumstances.

Why Orthodox & Catholics Differ on Union with God & Church Authority

<div>What values are the pillars of an authentic Catholic life? I am looking for a basic start and renewal of my faith. </div><div>The foundations or pillars of an authentic Catholic life are summarized in the traditional four pillars of Catholic catechisms: faith, liturgy/sacraments, life in Christ, and prayer, which Peter distills in Acts 2:42.
In that light, the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) is an essential “playbook” or guide for any Catholic, and its table of contents, along with it subject, Scripture, and other indices, are useful in helping even the novice gradually and confidently navigate its contents.
We need to know the Church’s teachings on faith and morals, which encompass the sacraments and prayer as well. We also need to implement those teachings in our lives, relying on the sacraments—the fundamental source of grace in the life in Christ—and an ongoing prayer life in general to grow closer to Jesus and his Church.
So frequent reception of the Eucharist and regular reception of the sacrament of reconciliation are highly recommended, and a daily prayer life is a must, including personal prayer and Scripture or other religious reading. In this regard, one should be mindful of one’s state in life, meaning a husband, for example, should pray regularly with and for his wife and children.
Fidelity to Church teaching, which provides us the truth that sets us free (see John 8:31-32), is non-negotiable, which means the authentic formation of our conscience does not give us veto power over any Church teaching, contrary to misguided doctrinal views to the contrary (see CCC 1776; 1783-1785; 1792). Rather, one should grow in the three theological virtues (faith, hope and love), the four cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, temperance, fortitude) and the other virtues as well, and seek the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit to aid the cause—all of which are all addressed in Part Three of the CCC.
If one faithfully uses the CCC as their basic guide to life, they will do well in the life in Christ.

“Matthew contradicts the other Gospels when he says that Jesus used two animals during his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. It also, absurdly, says he rode both at once.”
DEFENSE
There is no contradiction, and he didn’t ride both at once.
When two things are involved in an encounter, the evangelists frequently simplify their recounting of the event by mentioning only one (see Day 37). This is within the level of descriptive approximation one expects (see Day 258).
Here Matthew gives the fuller account by mentioning both animals (Matt. 21:2), while the others simplify by mentioning only one (Mark 11:2; Luke 19:30; John 12:14).
Jesus undertook the triumphal entry to fulfill the prophecy: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! . . . Lo, your king comes to you . . . humble and riding on an ass, on a colt the foal of an ass” (Zech. 9:9; cf. Matt. 21:5).
At the time, some understood this prophecy as involving two animals and some as involving one. Because of the first interpretation, it would be reasonable for Jesus to use two animals, even if only one were need- ed. Matthew wants to make sure those who understood the prophecy in the first sense realize Jesus fulfilled it, so he mentions both animals.
By contrast, John is less concerned about the two-animal interpretation, and he mentions only one. However, to prevent confusion, he further abbreviates the prophecy to remove the part some interpreted as referring to the colt’s mother (see John 12:15).
Regarding Matthew’s statement, “they brought the ass and the colt, and put their garments on them, and he sat thereon” (Matt. 21:7), it may just mean he sat on the garments. Even if not, the ancient audience would not have understood this as meaning that Jesus rode both simultaneously.
They were more used to riding animals than we and fully knew this was not possible for a person to do, particularly if the animals have no special riding equipment but only some clothing put on them as makeshift saddles.
They would have understood the statement in the natural sense that Jesus rode one animal and then the other to fulfill the prophecy. (Alternately, some have proposed the disciples put the garments on the colt and Jesus rode it, but Matthew uses the plural pronoun “them” because the previously unridden colt was tied to its mother, which was being used to calm and guide it.)

Does God Love Some People More? The Devil and Salvation

<div>My eldest daughter has been dating her girlfriend for about five years and living with her for two. She says their relationship is platonic, but that they are also exclusive and committed for life. While my husband and I permit them to visit our home and stay overnight, we require them—including for the sake of our four children still at home, especially our youngest (a son who is nine)—to sleep in separate rooms, with one sleeping in a spare bed and another on the couch. To send a stronger message to all our children, should we only permit day visits when they come together and overnight visits only when our eldest daughter visits by herself? </div><div>First, may God bless you and your husband abundantly for loving your oldest daughter and her friend authentically, while also giving a faithful witness to your younger children, particularly your youngest (John 10:10)! 
As you have done thus far, I think letting your eldest child visit—but having her and her friend sleep in separate beds and in separate rooms—is a legitimate both/and in loving them authentically, while also giving your younger children, particularly your youngest son, a faithful witness. 
I say this because you and your husband have maintained good communication with your eldest daughter, including sharing the truth in love to her and her friend and requiring them to live chastely while visiting your home. In addition, at the same time, you have faithfully witnessed to your other children that two women are called to be true friends—and thus relate to each other as loving sisters and not “romantic partners.” 
In addition, as your youngest grows up and asks more questions, you can consistently remind him of the faithful approach you and your husband have taken with all of your children, including witnessing to him as the youngest. 
You and your husband are a truly loving witness to many other Catholic parents, who all too often compromise their morals in a misguided attempt to avoid alienating their children while not trusting God in key ways. 
Also, I encourage you to contact the Catholic apostolate Courage (<a href="https://couragerc.org/">couragerc.org</a>), which faithfully supports those who experience same-sex attraction (SSA), and thus could serve your eldest daughter and her friend.

Further, Courage has produced a wonderful documentary entitled Desire of the Everlasting Hills. It’s poignantly raw at some points, so I’d advise not watching it with your younger children. But it is edifying.

Explaining the Dogma of Original Sin

Caller: And I&#8217;m curious about what the Catholic Church broadly believes in terms of Protestants who claim that the Spirit has led them to receive ordination within Protestant orders. I&#8217;m curious if the Church affirms that.
And then specifically, I have a couple of friends who are seeking ordination within the Episcopal Church, and it&#8217;s a husband and a wife who are both hoping to receive ordination. I&#8217;m curious, would it be scandalous for me to attend an ordination, especially considering one of them is a woman and we do not affirm ordination for women? So I&#8217;m just curious, kind of those two thoughts.
Jimmy: Okay, so in regard to the first question, nobody in the Protestant community, I mean, there may be very few exceptions, like people who have holy orders, because the bishop who is going to ordain them is a former Orthodox or former Catholic or something like that. But apart from those situations, there aren&#8217;t Protestant churches in general that have valid holy orders.
And so apart from exceptional cases, nobody in the Protestant community has a vocation in the proper sense of being ordained because they don&#8217;t have valid holy orders. Having said that, could God work with people who have an incomplete understanding of ordained ministry and encourage them to do good in the community in which they find themselves?
You know, these are people who are innocently ignorant of the fact they need to be Catholic. They&#8217;re innocently ignorant of the fact that, you know, ordination is a real thing and a serious thing in a Catholic context. So assuming they don&#8217;t, and they may mistakenly believe we have valid holy orders in our community, could God, despite the imperfect understanding of these people, could He invite them in some sense or allow them in some sense to do good in their community with its version of ministry, even though it&#8217;s not validly ordained ministry?
I would have to say that moral theology would say, yeah, that&#8217;s possible. There are still people who are in good conscience in the Protestant community. They&#8217;re innocently unaware of the truth of the Catholic faith. They&#8217;re in good conscience. They&#8217;re trying to follow God. There are baptized brothers and sisters in Christ, and they need pastoral care.
So there need to be people in the Protestant community to minister to them spiritually, even if they don&#8217;t fully understand everything. So God is going to make provision for people to provide that care for them.
So I would say that in broad strokes, yeah, God could say, oh, here is a person in the Protestant community. They&#8217;re innocently unaware of the fullness of my will, but based on what they do know of my will and their talents and the spiritual gifts that I&#8217;ve given them through the Holy Spirit, could they serve as a minister to care for the pastoral needs of people in the Protestant community? God would say, sure.
And He, on some level, might give them the thought, hey, given your abilities and your talents, why don&#8217;t you help the people in your community? Now, at some later point, He may lead them into a fuller appreciation of His will, but as long as they&#8217;re not at that point, Catholic moral theology would not say that God can&#8217;t do that.
That&#8217;s a separate question. As you indicated, Adam, than what if your friends who are Episcopalian decide to invite you to their ordination? Well, I think you phrased it in terms of, would that be scandalous? Well, let&#8217;s think about that.
Scandal is, properly speaking, it&#8217;s not outrage. All kinds of things are outrage that are not scandal or are outrageous that are not scandal. What scandal is, in the proper sense, is committing an action that would have the tendency to lead someone to do something that is objectively wrong.
So would your attendance at this ordination ceremony have a tendency to lead anybody to do something that&#8217;s objectively wrong? And remember, given that Jesus taught us what we do in our hearts is also doing something that could include thinking something that&#8217;s objectively wrong?
Well, let&#8217;s start with the two parties in question. If they invite you to come to their ordination, would they infer from that something that is objectively wrong, like you believe they&#8217;re really genuinely ordained, or you believe that what they did is absolutely okay with no qualifications?
Well, if they would be led to believe that, then you would be scandalizing them. On the other hand, we could broaden that out to, you know, will there be other people at this who know you and know you&#8217;re a Catholic and might think, oh, I guess Adam&#8217;s presence here means this is all okay with no qualifications, when in fact there would be qualifications?
Well, you could potentially lead someone else into scandal as well. Or if other Catholics who don&#8217;t attend the ceremony learn about it, they might think, oh, you think it&#8217;s absolutely okay, and that could lead them into scandal.
So there is a potential for scandal here, but it doesn&#8217;t seem to me it&#8217;s an automatic thing. If your friends know you and know you well and know that you wouldn&#8217;t approve of that, you don&#8217;t think either of their ordinations is going to be objectively valid, especially the woman&#8217;s ordination, then you&#8217;re not really scandalizing them because they know your opinion on this matter.
So it could be possible for you to witness this action just for reasons of friendship, as long as they know that you&#8217;re not endorsing it or viewing it as something more than what, from a Catholic point of view, it would be. At least that&#8217;s a hypothetical possibility. I can imagine that scenario.
And other people who attend this, they may not know you. If this is an Episcopalian ordination, there may not be any Catholics you know there. And if you keep it on the down low and don&#8217;t start telling everybody about it, no other Catholics who aren&#8217;t there would know about your attendance either.
So I can imagine scenarios where you wouldn&#8217;t be giving scandal to someone, but I can also imagine scenarios where you would be. Which of those is actually going to be the case is going to depend on a knowledge of the circumstances on the ground, you know, at the time this would occur. And that&#8217;s something you would know better than me.
Caller: Yeah, well, thank you for that. And I think you’ve done a good job of kind of painting my dilemma. They both know that my wife and I are faithful Catholics, that we affirm the Church&#8217;s beliefs on ordination and that we don&#8217;t.
Now, I don&#8217;t think we have not actually sat down and said, hey, look, just want you to know that we&#8217;re happy with the two of you, but we don&#8217;t affirm what you&#8217;re doing. You know, we haven&#8217;t had that exact conversation. But they know that I&#8217;m a faithful Catholic.
So I&#8217;m torn between that. Do I go in support of friendship or do I refrain knowing that ultimately I do not affirm what they&#8217;re doing, and I don&#8217;t want to be morally compromised? I kind of think that that is the dilemma I&#8217;m in right now.
Jimmy: Yeah, well, should I stay or should I go is a classic question. You know, if you stay there, there could be trouble, and if you go, it could be double. So that&#8217;s part of living in life is, you know, sorting out difficulties like this and deciding, do I need to have this conversation with them?
How much do they already understand? Would it help? Would it hurt if I had the conversation? If I go or if I don&#8217;t, would that help or hurt?
It&#8217;s a complex situation, but that&#8217;s the situation that God has put us in. And if we pray and think, use the gift of reason that God gave us, and make the best decision we can, that decision, whether it&#8217;s right or wrong, the attempt to make the right decision for God is pleasing to Him.

Can I Celebrate a Woman Becoming a Pastor?

Joe shows how the Finding of Jesus In The Temple prefigures the Resurrection, and what this means for the faithful.

Welcome back to Shameless Popery. I&#8217;m Joe Heschmeyer. Happy New Year. I want to talk about the finding in the template. It&#8217;s a strange event in the Bible that many of us just heard about this past Sunday. Specifically, I want to ask, how and why did Joseph and Mary lose Jesus in the temple in the first place? I&#8217;ve actually seen people argue that this event proves that Mary must have had other kids. As one Twitter user put it, if Mary only had one child, she would not have lost track of Jesus. That&#8217;s the obvious observation of anyone who&#8217;s had the responsibility for their own children that belong in a group. This guy calls it the Home Alone hypothesis because of that scene in Home Alone where Kevin&#8217;s sister&#8217;s doing a headcount and doesn&#8217;t realize she&#8217;s counted one of the neighbor kids instead of her missing brother. 
One, two, three, four, 11, 92, 12. Buzz, don&#8217;t be a moron. Six, seven, eight, nine, 10. And look, it&#8217;s a clever theory and it actually does get one detail half right, which we&#8217;re going to get to in a minute. But the overall theory is actually contradicted, I would say, both by the layout of the temple and by the wording of Luke chapter two. So a little background here. Deuteronomy 16 requires that three times a year, including on Passover, all your males would appear before God in one place. In the first century, that one place was the temple in Jerusalem. Now, this commandment was understood to apply only to men, although it&#8217;s clear from historical evidence, including Luke to itself, that women and children would also join on these pilgrimages. And so as a Navarre biblical commentary points out, on pilgrimages to Jerusalem, the Jews used to go in two groups, one of men, the other of women. 
Children could go up with either group. This explains how they could go a day&#8217;s journey before they discovered the child was missing when the families regrouped to camp. Now, one of the reasons for men and women making the final part of the pilgrimage separately, it involves the physical layout of the temple itself. As the first century Jewish writer Josephus explains, the temple is made up of four courtyards. Anyone, including the Gentiles, could enter the first. Jewish women could go into the first two. Jewish men could go into the first three and only the priest could go into the final, the fourth courtyard.

Further back, a larger area was designed for public assembly known as the woman&#8217;s courtyard. It included an extensive wooden balcony for women. The nation would gather three times each year to celebrate the festivals of Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot. 
Joe: 
Now remember, St. Luke tells us that Jesus is 12 when the finding in the temple occurs. So he&#8217;s on the cusp of manhood and Jewish culture. So it&#8217;s really not that surprising that Mary might believe him to be with the men&#8217;s group and Joseph might expect him to be with the women and children who are remaining outside. And remember, these are not the days of helicopter parenting and Jesus is 12, not three. I think for many people considering this story, it&#8217;s important to understand the oddity of our own culture, how strange our culture is today compared to all of human history. Now you can see what I mean, graphically illustrated in Tim Gill&#8217;s book, Urban Playground. He looks at four generations of the same family, all living in the same city. And he asks a question, how far they were allowed to travel alone at the age of eight, and the differences are striking. 
In 1919, eight-year-old George Thomas was allowed to walk six miles by himself to go fishing. His great-grandson, Edward Thomas, on the other hand, is driven the few minutes to school, is taken by car to a safe place to ride his bike and can roam no more than 300 yards from home. Now, there are several factors that lead to this massive cultural shift. Gil points out the creation of cars actually make it much more dangerous for kids to walk anywhere alone, for instance. But the point here is that for many people reading Luke too today, we have to break free of this anachronistic idea that is Mary&#8217;s job to keep track of her 12-year-old son. Now, speaking of anachronisms, there&#8217;s another major change to family life from this past century, which makes it harder for us to accurately picture what&#8217;s happening here in Luke two. As David Brooks pointed out in an article in the Atlantic, the past century has seen a move from big, interconnected and extended families to smaller detached nuclear families consisting just of a married couple and their children. 
So if your vision of the family traveling to Jerusalem for the Passover is one of just Joseph, Mary, and Jesus, that&#8217;s too small, but not for the reason many people think. The people picturing a scene like the chaotic one from home alone are actually right in this sense, not because Joseph and Mary have other children, but because the Bible depicts them as traveling with a whole extended family, pay attention to the details. On the evening of the first day, when Joseph and Mary presumably meet up and realize Jesus isn&#8217;t with either of them, we&#8217;re told that they then sought him among their kins folk and acquaintances. Now, how have they made it that far in the first place without realizing that he was gone because they were supposing him to be in the company? What does that mean? Well, it means they&#8217;re traveling in a large group, in which it would be perfectly normal for a 12-year-old to be with his cousins rather than with his mom. 
If you have a big extended family and have Thanksgiving, picture something like that. And I personally find it interesting that this group consists of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, some assorted kinfolk and acquaintances, but there&#8217;s no mention anywhere of Jesus having any brothers or sisters in that group. Now, this still doesn&#8217;t answer the core question though. Why did Jesus get lost? But the answer is he didn&#8217;t. He was never lost. And we know this because Mary gets to ask Jesus this question directly, ask why has he treated them this way? And Jesus gives a fascinating answer.

Son, why has that done so to us? We hope my father and I have sought the sorrowing. How is it you sought me? Did you not know that I must be about my father&#8217;s business? 
Joe: 
Now in Greek, he actually says something like, &#8220;How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be about my father&#8217;s?&#8221; And the Greek just stops there. And you were left asking about his father&#8217;s what? You can take it to mean either his father&#8217;s house, temple, or that he has to be about his father&#8217;s work. He has to be doing the will of God. Both make sense, and I would suggest both are correct. That is the reason Jesus is in the temple isn&#8217;t because of human error, but because of a divine plan. And to understand the gravity of this point, we need to realize in important detail. There are nearly 30 years between Jesus&#8217; infancy and the beginning of his public ministry. And throughout that huge span of time, time in which God himself is roaming the earth, we know basically nothing. 
More specifically, this is the one and only event from that period of early years that the inspired authors made sure that we know about. And so we should be asking, what is it about this event that is so important? I would like to suggest a theory. Remember that the finding in the temple occurs when Jesus and his family go up to Jerusalem for the Passover. And remember, they find him after three days. Now that&#8217;s a phrase used four other times in the gospels. And in each of those four times, it&#8217;s Jesus announcing how he will die and rise again after three days. There are several prophecies he makes using similar language. In Luke 18, Jesus tells the 12 how they are going up to Jerusalem where he will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. They will scourge him and kill him, and on the third day he will rise. 
And Jesus is even clear that this betrayal is going to happen at the Passover. He says in Matthew 26, &#8220;You know that after two days, the Passover is coming and the son of man will be delivered up to be crucified.&#8221; So it doesn&#8217;t seem like a stretch to believe that when Mary heard her son saying things like this, she would connect the dots to this pivotal moment in his childhood. After all, when Luke describes the birth of Jesus, he tells us that Mary kept all these things pondering them in her heart. And again, after the finding in the temple here, he says that Mary kept all these things in her heart. In other words, Luke is telling us both where he&#8217;s getting these stories from. He&#8217;s getting these accounts from Mary, and second, that she&#8217;s been pondering them and the meaning of them since then. 
Flash forward now to Holy Week. St. Luke describes a group of women who&#8217;d come with Jesus from Galilee into Jerusalem and who followed him mourning as he carried the cross and who witnessed his death and burial. It&#8217;s no surprise we should find a large group of women like this. Remember, it&#8217;s Passover, and Mary is right there with them. Once again, she finds herself seemingly helpless and a throng of Passover pilgrims, but this time they&#8217;re not just unhelpful while she looks for her son, they&#8217;re shouting for his death. And when Jesus is crucified, she&#8217;s right there. In John 19, there are three Marys by the cross of Jesus, Mary, the mother of God, Mary the wife of Clopus, and Mary Magdalene. Then something strange happens. On Easter Sunday, we see Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the Seplaker. Two Mary&#8217;s. Who&#8217;s missing? Well, Jesus&#8217; own mother, of course. 
She&#8217;d been with the women on Good Friday, but appears not to have gone to the two month Easter morning. And that is quite strange at first, but perhaps it&#8217;s not so strange. After all, why did the women go there? Mark says that the two Marys go to his tomb with Salome and they bought spices so they might go and anoint him. Now, if my reading of this is correct, Mary is not at the two on Easter morning because she knows it&#8217;s going to be empty. After all, her son had promised her that on the third day he will rise and Mary is the kind of disciple who would ponder those kind of words in her heart. And what&#8217;s more, she&#8217;s already been through this in miniature with the finding of Jesus in the temple. She&#8217;s felt the pain of losing him, and then she&#8217;s been reunited with him on the third day only to realize that he&#8217;s been about his father&#8217;s work the whole time. 
So that&#8217;s the theory I would argue for. Jesus is purposely letting his mother experience the terror of losing her son in a city she doesn&#8217;t know, not an act of cruelty or indifference, but is a kind of preparation for the pain of losing him on Calvary so that she would know viscerally that even in the midst of this pain, everything is going to be okay. Remember Simeon&#8217;s prophecy after Jesus&#8217; birth, he tells Mary that Jesus is to be a sign that is spoken against, and then he says that a sword would pierce through Mary&#8217;s own soul. I don&#8217;t think you and I can quite imagine the horrors that Mary experienced on Good Friday as you watched her son tortured to death. And one of the strange ways that God is strengthening her seems to be by giving her a foretaste, both of how scary it is to lose her son and how incredible it is to be reunited with him and to be reminded that he was in his father&#8217;s hands the whole time. 
So I&#8217;d say it wasn&#8217;t for Jesus&#8217;s sake that the Father wanted him to stay behind in the temple for three days. Rather, it seems to have been for Mary&#8217;s sake and ultimately for our own, as long as we too are attentive and willing to ponder all these things in our hearts. THIS is Why Mary Knew Jesus Would Rise From The Dead

In part one of my series on the biblical roots of the Mass, we explored how Jesus’ one sacrifice of Calvary didn’t conclude on the cross, but rather <a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/when-did-jesus-finish-his-sacrifice">culminated</a> in everlasting glory in the heavenly sanctuary.
But how does Jesus’ one sacrifice become present here on earth at every Mass? That is, how—in the most profound fulfillment of the Lord’s Prayer—does “thy kingdom, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”? (Matt. 6:10).
In my first article, I mentioned briefly the reality of biblical remembrance, also known as liturgical remembrance. There was a special character to a “memorial sacrifice” in the Old Covenant, of which one example was the annual Passover, which we know was a communion sacrifice—one that was offered and eaten (Exod. 12:14).
<h2>Recollection vs. Remembrance</h2>
For the ancient Israelites, remembering was never simply a human recollection and honoring of a past event, in marked contrast to what we Americans do every July 4 in recalling and celebrating our nation’s founding. The signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, as well as in the events of the subsequent Revolutionary War, remain in the past. We have no direct contact with the original event.
To be sure, in terms of its animal and human participants, the Old Covenant Passover had its limited, finite aspects as well. The Israelites had to sacrifice new lambs every year, and priests could serve only from ages thirty to fifty (Num. 4:1-3). However, because of God’s participation in the first Passover, biblical remembrance for the Israelites becomes powerfully different from the mere human recollection associated with our Independence Day and similar events. Memory and action are intrinsically connected in the Bible, for to remember a past event is to call forth the power of that past event and experience its impact in the present. It is to be there, to relive the actual event in some sense, again, because of God’s participation (see CCC 1363). God, who created the dimensions of time and space, is not limited by time and space. The Lord is superhistorical, for he stands outside or above time, which enables him to be present to and impact all time, all human history.
To convey remembrance in this powerful, biblical way, the Israelites would use the Hebrew verb zakar and its derivatives, such as zikkaron, which is the Hebrew word for “memorial.” In short, God’s is the gift that truly keeps on giving; he simply has to remember a covenant promise to bring his blessing to bear on the present moment. In commanding that the Passover be a “memorial,” observed as an ordinance every year, God invited successive generations of Israelites to acknowledge and draw upon the divine power of the original event.
The Jewish Talmud provides further insight about the profound nature of a memorial sacrifice in the mind of the ancient Israelites. In Tractate Pesahim (or Pesachim), which references the norms for the Passover communion sacrifice, we read, “In celebrating the feast, we must act as though we ourselves had come up from Egypt” (Pesahim 10, 5).
So when the Old Covenant Israelites remembered the Passover, God enabled the original event to transcend time and impact participants in the present-day celebration, whether fifty, 450, or a thousand years later. The Lord’s action that first Passover possessed an enduring power that the Israelites could tap into again and again, every time they commemorated the feast.
<h2>The Mind-Boggling Power of New Covenant Remembrance</h2>
“Remembrance” in the New Covenant Passover is much more profound. Because
<ul>
<li>there’s only one Lamb: Jesus Christ</li>
<li>one priest: also Jesus</li>
<li>and Jesus happens to be . . . God (John 1:1-3, 14; 8:58; see Rev. 5:6, 12).</li>
</ul>
Consequently, in contrast to the Old Covenant Passover, the entire reality of Christ’s one sacrifice of Calvary, inclusive of his actions at the Last Supper (the inaugural New Covenant Passover), becomes present every time a priest offers the sacrifice of the Eucharist!
So we become present at the foot of the Cross in mystery. But we also become united with the heavenly sanctuary, where Jesus intercedes for us now as the high priest of heaven (<a href="https://www.catholic.com/qa/why-the-mass-when-theres-no-need-for-sin-offering">Heb. 8:1-3</a>; see <a href="http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p2s1c2a1.htm">CCC 1137-1139</a>). Jesus does not shed his blood and suffer anew, and in this qualified sense we refer to the Eucharist as a “bloodless sacrifice.” And yet, because the totality of his one sacrifice culminated in everlasting glory (see Rev. 5:6), we offer anew and partake of the one glorified Lamb of God!
As Pope St. Paul VI distills in the <a href="https://www.vatican.va/content/paul-vi/en/motu_proprio/documents/hf_p-vi_motu-proprio_19680630_credo.html">Credo of the People of God</a>, no. 24,
<blockquote>We believe that as the bread and wine consecrated by the Lord at the Last Supper were changed into his body and his blood, which were to be offered for us on the cross. Likewise the bread and wine consecrated by the priest are changed into the body and blood of Christ enthroned gloriously in heaven, and we believe that the mysterious presence of the Lord, under what continues to appear to our senses as before, is a true, real and substantial presence (see <a href="http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p2s2c1a3.htm">CCC 1363; 1353; 1356-1368</a>).</blockquote>
St. Paul affirms that the Eucharist is a real partaking of Christ’s body and blood, for how  can mere wine (or grape juice) and bread cause people to get sick or even die? (1 Cor. 11:23-30; see also 10:16-17). Paul also affirms the Eucharist’s sacrificial nature in comparing it to offerings sacrificed to demons (1 Cor. 10:14-22).
<h2>Here Comes the Son!</h2>
Many Protestant Christians mistakenly believe that Catholics teach that we re-crucify Jesus anew at every Mass, as if we hope that our Lord can put himself through his passion and death just one more time,and emerge victorious in a new resurrection. If that were true—and praise God, that’s a caricature of the eucharistic sacrifice—then our doctrine would approximate the plight of the mythical Phoenix bird, who cyclically emerges anew from its ashes.
The “Sun Analogy” is more apt. Relative to us, the sun rises in the east every morning, and yet the sun continues working 24/7, even when it’s dark in our part of the world, or we’d freeze to death. In that light, pun intended, what’s new at every sunrise is not the sun, but our experience of the sun!
Similarly, Jesus the heavenly high priest always lives to make intercession for us through his one self-offering (Heb. 7:23-25, 9:23-24). So what’s new at every Mass is not a new sacrifice of Jesus . . . but rather our participation in that sacrifice, which Jesus blessedly enables, in a bloodless, gloriously completed manner—and which the Church thus can—and does—offer 24/7 around the world (see Mal. 1:11).
Consequently, the Mass is our window onto heaven. That means that paradise . . . is as close as your nearby Catholic church!

“What difference does it make if Mary remained a virgin? Couldn’t God have continued Jesus’ mission if she had other children?”
DEFENSE
God is omnipotent and can do anything he chooses, but this doesn’t mean his choices are arbitrary.
This objection is a subcase of a broader one: Why should Mary be a virgin in the first place? Couldn’t God’s Son be born of a woman who wasn’t a virgin?
He could have. Being omnipotent, God could do that. He even could have had his Son born of a prostitute if he chose.
It isn’t intrinsically required that Mary be any special kind of woman to be Jesus’ mother—just that she be a woman. However, this doesn’t mean it wasn’t appropriate for God to give Mary certain qualities to make her a more fitting mother for his Son.
This applies, in the first place, to the virginal conception itself. The fact that Jesus was conceived without a human father is striking, arresting. It naturally raises the question: “What does this mean?”
One could say, “It makes a difference because God had prophesied in advance that his Son would be born of a virgin” (see Days 253 and 254). But this only raises the question: “Why did God prophesy that? What difference did it make that his Son be virgin-born?”
The answer is that, if Jesus doesn’t have a human father, his father must be looked for outside of the human realm. Jesus’ Father is not on earth but in heaven: His Father is God. This is the fundamental point underscored by the Virgin Birth.
It is also the fundamental reason for Mary’s perpetual virginity (see Day 188). Consider: If Joseph and Mary later had children, it would raise doubts about the Virgin Birth itself.
Jesus was conceived when Mary was already legally married to Joseph, but before their time of cohabitation began (Matt. 1:18; Luke 1:26–34). If the two had gone on to have other children, it would have been all the easier to say, “Jesus wasn’t literally the Son of God. His parents just had sex sooner than they let on.”
The fact that Mary remained a virgin even after Jesus’ birth thus underscores the fact that he is God’s Son, the same way the Virgin Birth itself does.

“Why shouldn’t science be the ultimate guide to truth in all matters?”
DEFENSE
Because some truths are inaccessible to science.
First, there are many subjects in life where it would be foolish to try to apply the scientific method. For example, it would be foolish for a man who desires to know if his wife still loves him to subject her to a series of scientific tests. Even if such tests were well designed, they would be likely to crush her remaining affection for him. This is a case where the attempt to impose scientific method disturbs the very thing being observed (a phenomenon also encountered on the subatomic level with Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle). This is not to say that it’s impossible to determine spousal love, but it is to say that science does not offer the method required.
Second, there are whole fields of knowledge that are inaccessible to science. One is morality. Moral goodness is a non-empirical quality— that is, we cannot detect qualities like good and evil using our senses or through devices that extend the range of our senses (e.g., telescopes, microscopes, spectrometers). Science can investigate the question of what people regard as morally good and evil. But since these qualities are scientifically undetectable, it is impossible to perform an experiment showing that a particular act is, objectively, one or the other. Thus science could show that most people regard torturing babies for fun is morally wrong, but there is no experiment capable of proving that it is, in fact, wrong.
Third, science draws heavily on principles from logic and mathematics. But in these fields, a different methodology is used to provide proofs. Instead of being based on prediction and experiment, logical and mathematical truths are proved by being derived from certain foundational principles (axioms) that are not demonstrable. Science does not and cannot use the scientific method to prove logical and mathematical truths it presupposes.
Fourth, science depends on metaphysical assumptions that cannot be verified by scientific method. For example, it assumes that the uni-verse behaves in a lawlike manner that can be extended into the past and future, so that the world did not spring into existence five seconds ago (complete with traces of a fictional history) and will not cease to exist five seconds from now.

“Peter didn’t have a special role among the apostles. Paul doesn’t show him special respect in his letter to the Galatians. He even opposed Peter ‘to his face’ (Gal. 2:11).”
DEFENSE
On the contrary, his letter to the Galatians shows that Paul acknowledged Peter’s unique role in the Church.
Paul’s critics had apparently accused him of trying to please men by preaching a watered-down gospel that did not require circumcision. Thus he stresses that he is not trying to please men and that his gospel is not of human origin (Gal. 1:10–12).
He then recounts a series of incidents to illustrate his assertion. Peter figures in each incident.
First (Gal. 1:13–24), he recounts how after his conversion he did not consult with anyone, though “after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas [i.e., Peter], and remained with him fifteen days” (Gal. 1:18).
Second (Gal. 2:1–10), he recounts how he returned for the Jerusalem council, and when he did so the other apostles “saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised (for he who worked through Peter for the mission to the circumcised worked through me also for the Gentiles)” (Gal. 2:7–8). He also notes that “James and Cephas and John . . . were reputed to be pillars” (Gal. 2:9).
Third (Gal. 2:11–16), he recounts how “when Cephas came to Antioch I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, he ate with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. . . . But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, ‘If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?’” (Gal. 2:11–12, 14).
Each incident shows Peter’s unique role: Paul went to visit Peter, not the other apostles. Peter had a special mission to the Jews that paralleled Paul’s mission to the Gentiles. Peter was recognized as a pillar. And, in the ideal test case of whether Paul would bend the gospel to please men, Paul was willing to stand up even to the most authoritative Church leader: Peter.

“Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Religion makes extraordinary claims, therefore we must have extraordinary evidence for them.”
DEFENSE
This depends on what you mean by “extraordinary.”
In its original sense, extraordinary refers to things outside of or different from the ordinary. It thus refers to anything uncommon. However, the term has acquired an additional sense, according to which extraordinary refers to things that are startling, overwhelming, or awe-inspiring. Used this way, the term becomes subjective, because different people find different things startling, overwhelming, or awe-inspiring. These distinctions must be kept in mind when evaluating the claim that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
For example, if the statement is taken to mean that religion makes claims about things that are outside of the ordinary then this is true, taking the word “ordinary” to refer to the ordinary course of nature. Religion holds that, in addition to the natural world, there is a supernatural realm that sometimes interacts with it, producing non-ordinary events like miracles. To validate these claims, one would need “extraordinary evidence” in the sense of evidence concerning the extraordinary—i.e., evidence that non-ordinary (uncommon, rare) things have happened.
To give a parallel, modern science holds that there are uncommon or rare events in cosmic history—like the Big Bang, which is a unique event so far as we can presently tell. To validate these claims one needs to produce “extraordinary evidence” in the sense of evidence about the extraordinary or evidence that such events have happened.
From a scientific point of view, however, one would not need to produce subjectively startling, overwhelming, or awe-inspiring evidence to validate the Big Bang—merely evidence that the unique event happened. In the same way, to validate the occurrence of a miracle, such as the Resurrection of Jesus, one would not need to produce subjectively overwhelming evidence, but merely evidence that such a rare or unique event occurred.
On the other hand, if the term “extraordinary” is taken in the subjective sense, then it is true that an extraordinary event (a startling, overwhelming one) could require startling, overwhelming evidence to convince a person it happened. However, this only reveals something about the subjective psychological state of the person considering the claim, not what an objective, dispassionate person would conclude.

“Christianity is irrational, for it requires faith, and faith is opposed to reason.”
DEFENSE
On the contrary, “faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth” (Fides et Ratio 1).
From the perspective of faith, reason is a gift from God. He gave us intellects, and he expects us to use them. There is thus no opposition between faith and reason. Both have a role to play.
Certain questions in life can be investigated by reason without invoking the tenets of faith—for example, various truths of mathematics and science.
However, no human is capable of personally verifying everything within the sphere of human knowledge. It exceeds the capacity of anyone to do this, and so every person must rely on others for some of the things he knows. He exhibits a form of faith in what others have learned (ibid., 31).
Further, even when one does personally verify something, an element of faith is present. This is why the findings of the sciences are always provisional. Although the hypothesis that electrons exist may explain many observations and may be accepted as a certainty by scientists who study the structure of the atom, there is always a gap be- tween the observational evidence and the hypothesis proposed to ex- plain it. Scientists make a leap of faith when they accept a particular hypothesis as the likely explanation of the data.
Thus even in the fields most associated with reason, we see a form of faith in play—we see faith and reason collaborating together in a fruitful manner.
The Christian claim is that the same dynamic applies to the field of religion. Reason is capable of establishing certain foundational matters, such as the existence of God. It also is capable of discovering and evaluating evidence of his activity in the world. When these evidences are examined, they point to the proposition that God has revealed himself to man in the person of Jesus Christ. Reason provides evidence supporting the Christian faith like it supplies evidence for scientific proposals.
There is no opposition between faith and reason; they work to- gether to enhance the scope of human knowledge.

Host: Let&#8217;s go to Carl in Wishing Waters, Arizona which is an awesome name, watching on Twitter, which, I guess that means Periscope, and so Carl, you are on with Jimmy Akin.
Caller: My question is a two-parter. How did the Church determine the current election process to elect a new Pope? And also, how did the Church determine that Linus was the successor to Peter, and do we know the method in which Linus was elected?
Jimmy: Okay, the answer to the last one is, we don&#8217;t know in any detail what the method was. We have early bishop lists that indicate that Linus was the successor of Peter, although they&#8217;re not all actually agreed. Some of them portray Clement as the successor of Peter, but the ordinarily received account is that Clement wasn&#8217;t the immediate successor of Peter, that the sequence went Linus, and then Cletus&#8211;or Anacletus, to give a fuller version of his name&#8211;and then Clement. And that&#8217;s the position that is taken in the bishop lists for the bishop of Rome that is the majority position.
But we don&#8217;t have enough data about the selection process they used at the time. It could have been that Peter appointed him directly, it could have been that there was an election among the clergy of Rome, we don&#8217;t know.
In terms of the process that the Church uses today, it&#8217;s something that evolved over time. Basically, it is a kind of election among the clergy of Rome. The Cardinals, even though they may be stationed&#8211;most of them&#8211;in various places with pastoral ministries throughout the world, like, you know, there are a number of Cardinals here in America&#8211;nevertheless, they also are appointed to positions in parishes in Rome. So the Cardinal Archbishop of Los Angels, for example&#8211;actually the current Archbishop of Los Angeles, Archbishop Gomez, is not a Cardinal at this point&#8211;but say his predecessor, Cardinal Mahoney, he would have a pastoral assignment here in America, in Los Angeles, but he would also have a titular pastoral assignment at a Church in Rome.
And so when the Pope would die, or now, resign, the Cardinal electors would be a subset of the clergy of Rome&#8211;the highest ranking clergy in Rome, being Cardinals&#8211;and they would gather and elect the Pope. And that&#8217;s a process that evolved over time. It&#8217;s certainly been done by Cardinals for centuries. Most Cardinals are also bishops, although there have been some exceptions to that.
In terms of the current regulations, they were established by John Paul II in a document, it&#8217;s an apostolic constitution, called <a href="http://w2.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/apost_constitutions/documents/hf_jp-ii_apc_22021996_universi-dominici-gregis.html">Universi Dominice Gregis</a>, and it&#8217;s on the Vatican website. Subsequent to the release of that, Pope Benedict issued a couple of motu proprio that made some slight adjustments to those provisions, and those are also on the Vatican website. So the rules are out there and for everybody to read, and you can check them out at <a href="http://w2.vatican.va/content/vatican/en.html">Vatican.va</a>.

<div>How do we differentiate between infallible teachings of the ordinary Magisterium and the opinions of Church Fathers?</div><div>The traditional opinion of the later scholastics is that when the <a href="https://www.catholic.com/encyclopedia/fathers-of-the-church">Fathers</a> are unanimous in an interpretation of <a href="https://www.catholic.com/encyclopedia/canon-of-the-holy-scriptures">Sacred Scripture</a> or a particular doctrine, then they are infallible. This is called the &#8220;unanimous consent&#8221; of the Fathers. It is important to remember that the teachings of the Magisterium are evaluated as to their relative certainty by their universality and by the way in which they are legally promulgated.
The <a href="https://www.catholic.com/encyclopedia/tradition-and-living-magisterium">Magisterium</a>, as it exists now, is supposed to be more technically precise. The Fathers teach practically always in the context of a real homily delivered liturgically or a commentary meant to be read aloud before an audience, with little emphasis on the legal weight of their words. In a certain sense, the Fathers have an authority that is so great that, ordinarily, statements of the Magisterium depend on the witness of the Fathers for their exposition and justification.
So it would be wrong to value the ordinary Magisterium simply over the Fathers. The ordinary Magisterium is like current legislation; the Fathers are the tradition and precedent behind the legislation.

Catholic apologist Trent Horn joins Cy Kellett to tackle a thought-provoking question about spiritual gifts in the Catholic Church. Responding to a listener&#8217;s experiences in a Pentecostal community, Trent highlights the diverse manifestations of the Holy Spirit, emphasizing how the gifts and fruits of the Spirit are present in the lives of Catholics and the saints.
Transcript:
Caller: We in our church, we have evidence of spiritual gifts, evidence of speaking in other tongues and people getting slain in the Spirit. And we have altar calls for healing and that kind of thing in our church.
Trent: Okay.
Caller: And I have. Of all the Catholics I have known, I have never heard of these things in the Catholic Church. Not that kind, anyway.
Trent: Right. Because, William, the Bible talks about many different kinds of spiritual gifts. Right? Like such as being a teacher, for example, or prophet or things like that. So I&#8217;m glad you qualified that, because in Paul&#8217;s letter to the Corinthians and other places, including the gifts of the Holy Spirit, you know, we talk about things, the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the fruit of the Holy Spirit, referring to things like counsel and wisdom, love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness.
And I think we see many of those things, both the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the fruits of the Holy Spirit in the lives of saints and in the lives of Catholics.
Now, there&#8217;s a few things I&#8217;d like to reply and ask you some questions about your concern here.
Number one, there are Catholics who manifest these particular charisms or gifts you&#8217;re referring to, such as speaking in tongues or being slain in the Spirit, which actually the Bible itself talks about speaking in tongues in a few verses. I&#8217;m not aware of the Bible describing being slain in the Spirit anywhere. The Bible talks about people falling on their face in the presence of God, but not the modern phenomenon of being slain in the Spirit. I don&#8217;t see that in the Bible at all, actually.
However, those kinds of charisms, you do see them in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. So you can look online, and there are Catholics who testify to having these particular gifts. And the Church says that these kinds of gifts can. The Holy Spirit can give them to people. So you can look up Catholic Charismatic Renewal to show there are Catholics who identify as having these particular gifts, and the Church permits it and says, yes, this can be a valid way the Holy Spirit gives gifts to the faithful.
However, I don&#8217;t think it follows that, one, merely showing these gifts shows that you are an authentic church, and two, not having them shows that you&#8217;re not.
William, you identify as Pentecostal. Are you familiar with Oneness Pentecostals?
Caller: Yes. They don&#8217;t believe in the Holy Trinity.
Trent: They don&#8217;t. Do you believe in the Trinity?
Caller: Yes, I do.
Trent: Okay. But the Oneness Pentecostals, they have a lot of tongues and slain in the Spirit too, right?
Caller: Yes, they do.
Trent: Right. But the problem is they&#8217;re not even. They&#8217;re not Christians even; they don&#8217;t even believe in the Trinity. So just because you see these charisms doesn&#8217;t even mean that the people have, that they&#8217;re even Christian or they have the correct theology.
So these particular charisms, number one, right there, wait a minute, they&#8217;re not a guarantee that you&#8217;ve got orthodox, faithful Christianity here. And number two, their absence. You know, in my church that I go to every Sunday, people aren&#8217;t speaking in tongues or being slain in the Spirit.
Though I will add as a qualifier, when we look in things like 1 Corinthians 14 and other parts of the New Testament, the Bible talks about speaking in a tongue or speaking in actual foreign languages a person may not understand. There&#8217;s not a lot of biblical evidence that for speaking in tongues in the time of the Bible is the same as now, which is just kind of incomprehensible utterances. Not to say that that&#8217;s not a gift of the Spirit, but I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s a good idea to say that, oh, if I don&#8217;t see these things, that&#8217;s not authentic Christianity.
Because I would ask you, William, where does the Bible say a church needs to have these things in all of its services to be authentic? The Bible describes it happening, but does it ever say anywhere every church needs to have this to be authentic?
You see where I&#8217;m going?
Caller: Okay, well, I know the Apostle Paul said that. I think he was speaking maybe at Corinth. He said, I wish all of you had the gift of speaking in tongues.
Trent: Sure. But he also says in First Corinthians, chapter 7, I wish all of you weren&#8217;t married like I was.
Caller: Okay, yeah.
Trent: So I mean he can, he can. Paul was very&#8230; there were lots of gifts. There&#8217;s lots of gifts that God can give us, but we can&#8217;t have them all. I mean it&#8217;s a gift to be a husband and father, to raise up holy children. And it&#8217;s a gift to be single, to devote your life to God, but you can&#8217;t have both at the same time.
So I mean there&#8217;s&#8230; that&#8217;s why St. Paul talks about in Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 14, he talks about all these different gifts God gives, but not that necessarily everyone&#8217;s going to have them or we&#8217;ll see them in every denomination.
And as I showed with the Oneness Pentecostals, even certain gifts, you know, that you&#8217;re valuing, like tongues and slain in the Spirit, they have those, but they&#8217;re not even Christian.
So I think what should lead us towards saying is this: the right church is not merely some of the charisms we may see there, but what&#8217;s their theology, what&#8217;s their authority?
And for me, what attracted me to the Catholic Church is that the authority of the Church through the succession of the bishops and the Pope goes all the way back to the apostles, that it&#8217;s not just a private interpretation of Scripture that the Church gave us. Scripture, you know, sacred tradition and Scripture were entrusted to the Church. Jesus founded through the sacraments that God gives us gifts through charisms.
But also the greatest gift he gave us are the sacraments themselves, like the Eucharist, like confession, confirmation, and things like that.

<div>Is Islam a punishment for Abraham sleeping with his slave?</div><div>I assume you are referring to Abraham&#8217;s relationship with his wife Sarah&#8217;s maid, Hagar, which resulted in the birth of a son, Ishmael, and the subsequent banishment of Hagar and Ishmael after the birth of Abraham and Sarah&#8217;s son, Isaac (see Gen. 16, 21). While Ishmael is honored in Islam as a prophet and patriarch, he was not the founder of Islam nor responsible for its existence.
Islam began in the seventh century A.D. as a result of claims made by its prophet, Muhammad, to have received revelations from God. It would therefore be false to suppose that the existence of Islam is a &#8220;punishment&#8221; for Abraham&#8217;s actions. “Matthew states that Joseph ‘knew her [Mary] not until she had borne a son.’ This implies that he did have sexual relations with her later.”
DEFENSE
This overtaxes the meaning of “until.”
The term “until” (Greek, heōs) commonly indicated a particular state existed to a certain point, as in “John worked at his desk until five o’clock.”
The existing state often changes when the point is reached (thus, at five o’clock, John may go home). But change is not always indicated.
In 2 Samuel 6:23, Saul’s daughter Michal scoffed at King David’s enthusiasm for the Lord, and we read that she had no child “until” the day of her death. The word in the Septuagint Greek translation of the Old Testament is heōs. The passage does not mean Michal had a child after the day of her death. It means she never had children.
We see the same in the New Testament. In Matthew 13:33, Jesus tells a parable in which he says, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.” The use of “till” (heōs) does not mean that the leaven was later taken out of the flour.
Similarly, in Matthew 14:22, Jesus is at the Sea of Galilee and “he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while [heōs] he dismissed the crowds.” This does not mean that the disciples turned around and returned to shore as soon as Jesus dismissed the crowds. They continued their journey to the other side, which resulted in their meeting Jesus as he was walking on the water (Matt. 14:25).
Similarly, in Matthew 1:25, the evangelist’s point is that Joseph did not have sex with Mary before Jesus was born. His concern is to emphasize the virgin birth, not to address what happened later. This is consistent with the uses of “until” (heōs) documented above.

Around the year A.D. 383, the Church Father Jerome wrote a work known as Against Helvidius, in which he defended the perpetual virginity of Mary. In the course of this work, he gave numerous additional examples where the Greek Bible uses heōs (“until”) without implying a change in the state of affairs.
