What Do I Do About A Loud Confessor?

I’m straight! An elderly priest loudly said "homosexual" repeatedly during my confession and dozens heard. Should I complain? Should I switch parishes?

I can see that this was a mortifying experience for you, and I am very sorry that it happened. In addressing it, I would caution you to please remember that the priest will be unable to defend himself because he will be bound by the seal of the confessional. I should also note that anyone who overheard the confession is also bound by the seal of the confessional (canon 983, Code of Canon Law).

Since the priest cannot defend himself, I recommend that you simply do not go to confession to him again. Should anyone mention to you that they overheard the priest’s comments, you can say, “Anything you overheard in a sacramental confession is protected by the seal of confession, and by Church law you are not allowed to repeat it to anyone, including me.”
