Does All Prayer Need to be Out Loud?

Can you pray in your heart or do you need to speak while praying?

Yes, prayer can be silent and in our hearts.

Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. (Heb. 4:12)

. . .for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. (Rom. 8:26)

As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli watched her mouth, for Hannah was praying silently; though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. . .Eli said, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have requested.” (1 Sam. 1:12-13, 17)

Lord, you have probed me, you know me: you know when I sit and stand; you understand my thoughts from afar. You sift through my travels and my rest; with all my ways you are familiar. Even before a word is on my tongue, Lord, you know it all.  (Ps. 139:1-4)
