Most faithful Christians will tell you Jesus Christ is fully man and fully God. But in a conversation with a Muslim or Jehovah&#8217;s witness, they might stumble when asked to prove this from the Bible. So in today&#8217;s episode, I&#8217;ll share with you my four favorite ways of showing Jesus as God when I&#8217;m in these kinds of conversations. But a few caveats before we continue. Second, these aren&#8217;t knocked down arguments so don&#8217;t go into a conversation with overconfidence like you have an indestructible proof for Christ divinity. These are meant to help you in average conversations when someone asks, where does the Bible say Jesus is God, or why should I believe Jesus is God? Remember that critics always have something to say in response to an argument, but these are four good ways to get started and I find the replies to these arguments aren&#8217;t overwhelmingly strong or confusing to engage.

And finally, there are some fan favorite verses that won&#8217;t make today&#8217;s list, but not because they&#8217;re bad. This includes the famous opening of John&#8217;s gospel in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. This is great evidence for the deity of Christ, but a regular person might have a hard time wrapping his head around the concept of Jesus being God&#8217;s word and a seasoned critic might try to trip you up on the absence of the definite article in Greek in the passage and try to say that it means Jesus is a God and not the almighty true God. Once again, it is a good piece of evidence for Jesus&#8217;s divinity, but today I&#8217;m going to share four simple but still effective ways to demonstrate that important doctrine starting with number one, John 20:28. Instead of focusing on the beginning of John&#8217;s gospel, I like to focus on the end of it.

Here&#8217;s the passage and context. Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them and said, &#8220;Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands and put out your hand and place it in my side. Do not be faithless but believing.&#8221; Thomas answered him, &#8220;My Lord and my God.&#8221; Jesus said to him, &#8220;Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.&#8221; The proof comes not so much from what is said by Thomas, but by what is not said by Jesus. In the New Testament, whenever an apostle is mistaken for God, the apostle corrects those who are worshiping him. This includes Paul and Barnabas being worshiped in Acts 14 and Revelation 19:10, where the apostle John falls at the feet of an angel to worship him, but the angel tells him, &#8220;You must not do that.

When Herod a gripa, the grandson of Herod the great who tried to kill Jesus when he was a baby. When he gave an address to the people of Tire and Sidon, they shouted in response, the voice of a God and not of man.&#8221; Luke then tells us immediately an angel of the Lord smoked him because he did not give God the glory and he was eaten by worms and died. But in John chapter 20, Jesus did not correct Thomas and he did not tell him to give God the glory instead. Also, no angel smoked Jesus for receiving Thomas&#8217;s worship. That&#8217;s because there was nothing for Jesus to correct. And if that&#8217;s the case, then we should imitate Thomas and not be afraid to address Jesus Christ as our Lord and God as well. Now, some Unitarians who deny the Trinity say Thomas was just so overcome with joy, he didn&#8217;t know what he was saying.

But in other scripture passages, we are told explicitly when the apostles say something they don&#8217;t mean. After Jesus&#8217; transfiguration, for example, Peter says impulsively that he will build tents for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. In response to this exclamation, Luke describes Peter as not knowing what he said. While Mark says that Peter did not know what to say for they were exceedingly afraid. Unitarians also can&#8217;t say that Thomas was merely making an exclamation, like how some people say, &#8220;Oh my God, when they&#8217;re surprised.&#8221; Even in the Jehovah&#8217;s Witness&#8217;s new world translation of the Bible, John 2028 says, &#8220;In answer, Thomas said to him, My Lord and my God. So Thomas didn&#8217;t merely exclaim my Lord and my God. He said it to Jesus because Jesus is his and our Lord and God. In 1989, the founder of Catholic answers Carl Keating debated an apologist for Iglesiana Cristo, a Unitarian religion like Jehovah&#8217;s witnesses that emerged in the Philippines in 1913.

When he presented John 2028, the apologist he debated Jose Ventelasion claimed that Thomas was just wrong about all of this. Did Jesus tell that to Thomas? Don&#8217;t do that. I&#8217;m just a man. No, he did not. Because he&#8217;s not just a man, he is God. Now he said, why don&#8217;t you believe I&#8217;m Thomas? Because Thomas was wrong. In order to get around this verse, some critics, including Ventelasion, go back a few verses earlier to John 2017. When Jesus told Mary Magdalene, &#8220;I am ascending to my father and your father, to my God and your God.&#8221; All right. Well, how can Jesus be God if he calls another person God? Well, Jesus can do that because God is one infinite act of being, not one solitary person. Moreover, if one of these divine persons such as the son became man and possessed a fully human nature, then as a man, he would give worship to the father and recognize the father is his God.

So there&#8217;s nothing contradictory in Jesus being the God ma who prays to the Father and recognizes that the Father is his God. But notice that even in his exchange with Mary Magdalene, Jesus makes a distinction between my father and your Father and my God and your God. Instead of just saying our God or our Father. This implies that God is a father to marry Magdalene and the apostles in a different way than he is a father to Jesus. Specifically, they and us have God as an adoptive father. As Romans 8:15 says, &#8220;Whereas Jesus has the Father as his true Father because he is the only begotten son of God,&#8221; as John 1:18 says. Number two, Titus 2:13. Here&#8217;s the context of the verse. &#8220;For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions and to live sober, upright and godly lives in this world awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

Those who claim Titus 2:13 does not call Jesus God say the passage should be translated this way. The appearing of the glory of our great God and of our Savior Jesus Christ. This would mean only the title of Savior belongs to Jesus, not great God, but there&#8217;s two things we should consider. First, although it&#8217;s true humans can be saviors in a limited sense in the Bible, only God can save humanity from sin, which is the salvation being talked about in this verse. And second, a good case can be made that both terms apply to Jesus based on a similar construction in two Peter 1:11, which says this. &#8220;So there will be ritually provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Most critics would connect Lord and Savior in that verse to Jesus Christ so there&#8217;s no good reason not to connect the similar titles of savior and great God to Jesus Christ in Titus 2:13.

There&#8217;s also more evidence for this translation in a Greek grammar rule called Granville Sharp&#8217;s rule. It basically says if you have two nouns that are not proper names and the first noun has an article in front of it, but the second does not and both nouns are connected by the word and in Greek ki, then both nouns refer to the same person. So in two Peter 1:11,&#8221; Lord and Savior are not proper names. The Greek word translated as Lord has an article, but the Greek word translated as Savior does not, and both words are connected by the word and. So we can conclude from Sharp&#8217;s rule that both Lord and Savior refer to the same person, Jesus Christ. And since Titus 2:13 has an almost identical sentence structure to two Peter 1:11, it makes sense to translate it the same way and say that Jesus is both our savior and our great God.

Now be careful though, you don&#8217;t want to overcrank Granville Sharp&#8217;s rule to say this is a proof beyond all doubt. Critics have found exceptions to Sharp&#8217;s rule, which requires narrowing the rule a bit. So for more on that, see New Testament scholar Daniel Wallace&#8217;s article, Sharp Radivius, a reexamination of the grandfall sharp rule. But at the very least, I find in average conversations, the comparison to two Peter 1:11 is helpful in getting someone to see what feels to be the more natural reading of Titus 2:13. Number three, Jesus&#8217;s implicit teachings about himself. Many times Muslims and other non-Christians will demand proof in the form of where does Jesus say, &#8220;I am God, worship me. &#8221; Now you can go to passages like John 8:58 where Jesus applies the divine name of God I am to himself. But I like to take a subtler approach and show how Jesus demonstrated his divinity implicitly, which also answers critical scholars who say that belief in Jesus&#8217;s divinity was not part of the earliest traditions about Jesus.

For example, in the early synoptic gospels, Matthew Mark and Luke, Jesus affirmed, as he does in John, by the way, his divine identity by gathering 12 disciples who symbolize the 12 tribes of Israel. Jesus could have only called 11 disciples and allowed himself to represent one of the tribes, like the tribe of Levi, which had a claim to the priesthood. Instead, Jesus stood apart from the 12 disciples. He gathered them together in the same way that God called the 12 tribes of Israel together. So we see Jesus&#8217;s self identity and how he chooses his disciples. And in Mark chapter 12, Jesus tells a parable about a vineyard whose wicked tenets kill the servants the owner has sent. The parable is similar to other illustrations from the prophets who identified the vineyard with Israel and the servants with the prophets that Israel had previously rejected. But in Jesus&#8217; parable, the owner&#8217;s last action is to send his son, whom the wicked tenants also kill.

But notice how Jesus identifies himself not with a servant of the owner of the vineyard, that is one of the human prophets, but with the son of the owner of the vineyard. And just as the son of the vineyard owner was killed because of his relationship to the father, so too would Jesus be killed because of his claim to having a unique relationship with the heavenly father in being the son of God. Finally, in Mark&#8217;s gospel, we see Jesus do things that only God can do. Like Mark two: eight where it says of Jesus, he was perceiving in his spirit that they, the religious leaders, thus questioned within themselves. Jesus knew the thoughts of their inner hearts, which one Kings 8:39 says only God can do. And in Mark 4:35- 39, Jesus calms the storm and the apostles ask, &#8220;Who then is this that even wind and sea obey him?&#8221; Well, Psalm 107 gives us the answer.

&#8220;Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still and the ways of the sea were hushed. And finally, we have number four, the witness of the early Christians. This isn&#8217;t a strict biblical proof, but who says we need to bind ourselves to solo scriptura? When proving Christ&#8217;s divinity to a non-Christian, any Christian should see the value in appealing to the early church&#8217;s explicit belief in Christ divinity and that this was not something that was added later like some da Vinci code conspiracy theory. In 810, Ignatius of Antioch wrote to the Ephesians about, &#8221; Being united and elected through the true passion by the will of the Father and Jesus Christ, our God. &#8220;He also said,&#8221; For our God, Jesus Christ was according to the appointment of God conceived in the womb by Mary of the seed of David but by the Holy Ghost.

&#8220;30 years later, the Christian writer, Aristides wrote,&#8221; And it is said that God came down from heaven and from a Hebrew virgin assumed and clothed himself with flesh. Jesus&#8217; divinity is also why writers like Ignatius value the Eucharist as Jesus&#8217; true flesh that has saving effects. Ignatius writes in his letter to the Ephesians of Jesus Christ being both the son of man and the son of God and that Christians should obey the bishop and the presbytery with an undivided mind, breaking one in the same bread, which is the medicine of immortality and the antidote to prevent us from dying, but which causes that we should live forever in Jesus Christ. Although I need to give a word of caution about appealing to the church fathers. They didn&#8217;t have a precise theological vocabulary to explain the incarnation like later Christians who lived around the time of the council of Calsadon.

So critics will sometimes quote mine the early fathers to say they did not believe Jesus was God or didn&#8217;t believe in the Trinity, but that still doesn&#8217;t explain these clear citations. Instead, a better explanation is that we see a trajectory of the early church refining its language to proclaim Jesus is not just a man or an angel, but that he is the God who made men and angels. Finally, we also have evidence from non-Christians that Christians believe Jesus was not just a prophet but God himself. Plenty of the Younger, the second century governor of the Roman province of Bythenia interrogated Christians who refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods. In a letter to Emperor Trajian, he observed that Christians &#8220;were accustomed to meet on a fixed day before Dawn and sing responsibly a hymn to Christ as to a God. Lucianisamusada was a second century playwright who thought Christians were gullible.

In his work, the passing in Paragrinis, he says Christians sinned by &#8220;denying the Greek gods and by worshiping that crucified sophist himself and living under his laws.&#8221; Finally, a third century drawing called the Aleximanos Graffito shows a Roman soldier worshiping a man with a donkey head being crucified. My Four Favorite Ways to Prove Jesus is God

Abraham Lincoln would have known how to behave online.
The sixteenth president is the most famous practitioner of the “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/23/opinion/sunday/the-lost-art-of-the-unsent-angry-letter.html">hot letter</a>,” a strategy he used in correspondence with folks who had upset him. He’d draft a letter full of fiery anger, then set it aside and let himself cool off before sending a more levelheaded response instead.
On the internet—particularly on social media, which incentivizes <a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/blog/apologetics-is-not-trash-talk">short, snarky, cutting rhetoric</a>—I cannot recommend this strategy enough. Some days, it seems as though everyone online is firing off nothing but hot letters out in the open, which of course does no one any good. If you want to have conversations on social media that are not only productive but also calm and respectful, try adopting Abe’s technique (if you don’t want calm, productive online conversations, I suggest you DELETE THE INTERNET NOW).
I’ll illustrate how it works with a real example. A week or so ago, someone on X (formerly Twitter) made a snarky post insinuating that professional apologists (like those at Catholic Answers) are little more than lazy grifters, since they spend more time answering other faiths than they do “cleaning up” the Church’s messes.
My first impulse was to fire back in kind. I typed out what I thought was a terrific rejoinder: “Please let us know, O Great and Wise One, when you’ve judged the Church to be sparkling clean enough that those who dare to explain and defend the faith are once again permitted by Your Grace to share their knowledge with everyday Catholics.” That would put this guy in his place!
But as my mouse hovered precariously over “send,” I began to calm down. I knew my reply wouldn’t make for a productive conversation—the other fellow would simply snark back, I’d be upset again, and the cycle would repeat. But my “hot comment” still proved helpful: it clarified my thoughts. Sarcastic rejoinders are often highly condensed, spiced-up versions of real, substantive arguments that can be drawn out and presented more respectfully after a little introspection.
So that’s exactly what I did. I thought about what I was trying to say underneath all my sarcasm, and replied with that instead:
<blockquote>If this were [about] a high-ranking prelate, your criticism might be more legitimate. Here, though, it&#8217;s misdirected.
No matter how corrupt and broken the Church is, there are always potential converts who are just a few corrected misconceptions away from the Church. There are always honest Catholics who want to know how to answer day-to-day challenges to their faith. And there are always smart, studious folks who can perform a spiritual work of mercy by sharing what they know with those who, for one reason or another, can&#8217;t put in the same amount of study themselves.</blockquote>
How did my interlocutor respond? He didn’t argue further (and I don’t begrudge him that—internet arguments aren’t fun), but instead gave “Honest props . . . for even-keeled and good-humored engagement with my original post.” And with that, we were done.
This interaction (for which I give my guardian angel full credit) is my new Lincoln-esque model for how to behave online. But of course, it’s not my idea, or even the Great Emancipator’s; the inspired author told us millennia ago that “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Prov. 15:1). The beauty of this wisdom is that it leaves open the possibility of putting an unspoken harsh word to use.
If someone agitates us, we should clap back with everything we’ve got—but don’t hit send. Instead, let’s cool off, look over our reply, and ruminate on what we were really trying to say. Then let’s say that, calmly and respectfully; and if the other person doesn’t want to reciprocate, let him go. If we follow this model, I think the internet could—maybe—become a happier place.

Faith Delivered “Once For All”

Luke reports that, on the day of Pentecost,
<blockquote>suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:2-4).</blockquote>
This is one of several mentions of speaking in tongues in the Bible. It’s mentioned several times in Acts, and the major discussion with it outside Acts is in 1 Corinthians 12-14.
In the nineteenth century, the term glossolalia was coined to refer to speaking in tongues (Greek, glóssa = “tongue” and lalia = “speech”). However, in the twentieth century, this term became involved in a controversy about the nature of the tongues in question.
In the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements, it is sometimes held that “glossolalia” involves not real human languages, but “private prayer languages” that God enables one to speak.
Consequently, some have begun to refer to miraculously speaking a real foreign language as xenoglossy (Greek, xenos = “stranger, foreigner” and glóssa = “tongue”).
What happened on Pentecost itself?
It’s clear that the manifestations the disciples witness are caused by the Holy Spirit, since they begin speaking in other tongues “as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
The sound of the mighty, rushing wind signals the arrival of the Holy Spirit, and the “tongues as of fire” (i.e., individual flames) that rest on each of them signify empowerment to speak in tongues. (It’s providential that both an individual flame and a language can be spoken of as a “tongue.”)
But what about the tongues that they began speaking in? What were they?
The normal meaning of “other tongues” would be foreign languages—i.e., ones other than the Aramaic the disciples would have known from their upbringing.
This is confirmed by the text, which goes on to say, “Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language” (2:5-6).
This means that the disciples were speaking not in private prayer languages, but in real-world languages that the international crowd of Jews already knew.
However, some have proposed that something different was happening. Focusing on the statement that “each one was hearing them speak” in these languages, some have held that this is really a “miracle of hearing” rather than a miracle of speaking.
In other words, the disciples were still speaking in their native Aramaic, but the crowd were hearing them in whatever their own native languages were.
This is a creative idea, but it is poor exegesis. The word “hearing” is consistent with both the idea that the disciples were miraculously speaking foreign languages and with the idea that the crowd was miraculously hearing foreign languages.
After all, if one of the disciples was miraculously speaking in Latin, then one of the visitors from Rome (2:10-11) would obviously hear him speaking in Latin. The word “hearing” thus doesn’t prove one interpretation over the other.
We thus need to take a step back and look at how the text conceptualizes the miracle, and here we do get an answer. Luke explicitly states that the disciples “began to speak in other tongues.”
He conceptualizes the miracle as taking place on the part of the disciples—not on the part of the crowd. The miracle is happening as soon as the disciples begin speaking; he doesn’t present it as beginning when others start hearing what is said.
The fact that this passage and others in the New Testament refer to the miracle as speaking in tongues rather than hearing in tongues strongly indicates that it is a miracle of speaking.
This is also indicated in 1 Corinthians 12. Paul distinguishes between the gift of speaking in tongues and the gift of interpreting tongues (12:10, 30), and in 1 Corinthians 14:5-19, Paul makes it absolutely clear that speaking in tongues is not understood by itself. It requires someone who can interpret the tongue, so this is not a miracle of hearing.
In fact, Paul indicates that without an interpreter, not even the person speaking in tongues mentally knows what he is saying (14:13-14, 19).
(Some have argued that the “speaking in tongues” mentioned in Acts is different from the one mentioned in 1 Corinthians, but this is exegetically unsound. If that were the case, then the companions Luke and Paul would not use the same name for two different phenomena.)
We thus have very strong evidence that on the day of Pentecost, the disciples were miraculously enabled (by those “tongues as of fire”) to speak actual, real-world languages that they didn’t know.
This does not mean that the Holy Spirit cannot give other, related charismatic gifts. In 2016, the Congregation (now Dicastery) for the Doctrine of the Faith published a document titled Iuvenescit Ecclesia in which it noted that, although there are several lists of charismatic gifts in the New Testament, “none of these lists claims to be exhaustive” (6) and that “there has never been a shortage of different charisms arising in the temporal course of ecclesial history” (9), including the charisms that inspire new movements.
I thus don’t have any problem with the idea of new charismatic gifts being given in new eras. If God wants to do miracles of hearing or give private prayer language in later Church history, that’s up to him.
It’s just not what Luke described happening on the day of Pentecost.

"Pray" does NOT mean "worship"

On May 17th, the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) released <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240517_norme-fenomeni-soprannaturali_en.html">new norms</a> for discerning <a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/the-ten-most-common-misconceptions-about-apparitions">apparitions</a> and other supernatural phenomena.
It was the first update to the rule since 1978, and one of its stated goals was to speed up the processing of cases.
Central to that was a revision of the categories bishops can use to classify apparitions. Traditionally, there were three. If we skip the Latin titles for them, they were “established as supernatural,” “not established as supernatural,” and “established as non-supernatural.”
But it took a long time to establish that something was definitely supernatural. It also conveyed the impression that the faithful were obligated to believe that it was supernatural, which was not the case.
The new norms therefore expanded the categories from three to seven to reflect different nuances of confidence and problems, and they reserved “established as supernatural” to the pope.
From now on, the most positive assessment that an ordinary bishop will give an apparition is “nothing obstructs”—i.e., the apparition looks positive and there’s nothing that obstructs the faithful from having a healthy devotion to it.
I <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgyykUl-hjw">was pleased</a> by the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErEw5z1eZvU">new, more nuanced categories</a>, but wanted to see how they would work out in practice, and I didn’t have to wait long!
It hasn’t even been three months since the new norms were announced, and the DDF has already made announcements on seven cases! At least for the moment, the goal of faster turnarounds has been achieved.
On June 27, the DDF weighed in on a set of ongoing apparitions in Trevignano, Italy. These are reported by a woman named Gisella Cardia and her husband Gianni. They center on a statue of Our Lady of Peace that allegedly weeps blood, multiplies food, and gives a monthly message. The local bishop had already barred the faithful from attending the events, and now the DDF has confirmed his judgment that the phenomena <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240627_comunicato-gisella-cardia_it.html">are not supernatural</a>.
On July 5, the DDF gave a more positive verdict on apparitions reported in 1947 and 1966 by Italian visionary Pierina Gilli, who reported the Virgin Mary appearing to her under the title Mystical Rose. The DDF pointed out positive elements in these apparitions and clarified the way in which certain potentially problematic statements need to be understood. In light of this, they <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240705_lettera-devozione-mariarosamistica_en.html">authorized the local bishop to conclude his discernment process</a>, presumably with a “nothing obstructs” ruling.
Also on July 5, the DDF gave a positive ruling for a diocesan shrine known as Our Lady of the Rock, which is based on appearances of Mary to Italian visionary Cosimo Fragomeni in 1968. The diocesan bishop had written the DDF on June 3—after the new norms came out—and the DDF handled the case in just a month, confirming the bishop’s judgment that <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240705_lettera-santuario-placanica_en.html">“nothing obstructs.”</a>
Another negative judgment came on July 11, when the DDF issued a press release announcing the verdict of a Vatican consultation from 1974 about the apparitions of “The Lady of All Nations” reported by Dutch visionary Ida Peerdeman of Amsterdam between 1945 and 1959. These had been the basis of a movement urging the pope to infallibly define Mary as having the titles Coredemptrix, Mediatrix, and Advocate. The apparition also had a confusing history of approval, and its advocates have continued to hope that it will be approved. However, the DDF regards the matter as closed and announced that in 1974 the experts at the then-Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith had unanimously judged that the apparitions <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240711_comunicato-apparizioni-amsterdam_en.html">were not supernatural and did not warrant further investigation</a>—a pair of decisions that were approved by Paul VI.
On July 15, the DDF gave approval to <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240715_lettera-santuario-maccio_en.html">a “nothing obstructs” ruling</a> for the spiritual experiences of Italian visionary Gioacchino Genovese, who reported revelations in 2000 of the Holy Trinity, which he referred to as “Trinity Mercy.” However, the DDF indicated that certain problematic statements made by Mr. Genovese needed to be interpreted in a particular way to avoid doctrinal error.
On August 1, the DDF issued a clarification about the figure of the 19th century Puerto Rican missionary catechist Elenita de Jesús, who some have identified as the Virgin Mary (and apparently as Jesus himself). While noting many positive aspects to her life and service, the DDF affirmed the local bishop’s desire to declare that any identification of her with Mary or Jesus is contrary to the Faith and <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240801_lettera-vescovo-caguas_en.html">not supernatural</a>—the same applying “to non-authentic apparitions or blood.”
The same day, the DDF <a href="https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240801_lettera-vescovo-caguas_en.html">issued a letter</a> affirming the activity of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary at a church in Vailankanni, India, though it did not rule on individual apparitions there.
It’s heartening that the DDF has been willing to clarify problematic statements from individual apparitions rather than simply dismissing them. While some of the recent activity may be due to clearing a backlog of cases now that the new norms are out, it is a promising start.
It remains to be seen how the DDF will rule on <a href="https://www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-popes-envoy-to-medjugorje">Medjugorje</a>, which has been under study by the dicastery for some years, and which the new norms seem designed to address.

Caller: Hi guys. Thanks for taking my call. I have a brother-in-law, he, you know, he was raised Catholic also, and stuff like that. And he&#8211;over the years, he was reading a lot of Protestant books and a lot of things like that. And I noticed he started thinking a lot like them, you know? And I told him, I said, &#8220;If you keep on doing that, you know, you&#8217;re gonna&#8230;you&#8217;re gonna start thinking what they believe, and believing what they believe. So anyway, it came to fruition now, he&#8217;s very anti-Catholic. In the last few years he&#8217;s just been posting these things on Facebook, you know, and all the family members are getting very upset. He posts these videos from, like, YouTube, like the history of the evil Catholic Church, and these things are like so ridiculous. If you know your faith at all, you know that they&#8217;re lies and stuff like that.
But when I try to talk to him, I even send them stuff from Catholic Answers to, like, you know, to refute these claims. Yeah. He&#8211;he&#8217;s just got like a wall up. He doesn&#8217;t&#8230; He just, &#8220;I thought the Catholic Church is this,&#8221; you know, the typical stuff. We worship statues, worship Mary, the Pope is the Antichrist. So, you know, my sister-in-law today was telling my wife that, you know, she was upset some of the stuff that was put on Facebook. What&#8211;I know have to pray for them and I do. What would be the best way to&#8230; to, like&#8230;you know, talk to him&#8211;
Tim: Danny, you know what&#8211;yeah, let me jump in because you already took part of my fire. You know my friend, the most important thing of all is that you pray for him. Offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for him. My friend, pray your daily rosary, offer up a decade, two, a rosary a day. I will tell you, Danny, that was the secret to Matt Doula that you mentioned before. I would find out later, after I left the Marine Corps, he was offering his mass every day for me, and he was praying a rosary for me everyday. I didn&#8217;t&#8211;and that was for a whole year&#8211;and I didn&#8217;t know it at the time, Cy, but I was a goner because of it. Now, it took a couple years for that to, you know, to come to fruition, but Danny, of course that&#8217;s the most important thing.
I would suggest something else as well. Here is what I do, and I&#8217;ve done it many times over the last&#8230;hard to believe, 29 years that that I&#8217;ve been Catholic. My goodness, 29 years, Cy! It seems like yesterday. But anyway, Danny, ask your brother-in-law: &#8220;What is the single most absolutely crazy thing that you could never believe about the Catholic faith?&#8221; One thing, not ten things, not a hundred things. I tell you, Danny, most people make the mistake of trying&#8211;you know what I&#8217;m doing now? I got myself two thousand emails behind as of Christmas time&#8211;actually by about early February&#8211;and I told everybody, everybody who emails me: &#8220;If you email me 45 questions, I&#8217;m gonna answer one.&#8221; All right, now, I tell everybody now: you send me one. What is your biggest bugaboo about the Catholic faith? And I&#8217;ll answer that. And then we can go from there. Let me tell you, I&#8217;ve got my emails down from 2000 to about a hundred and seventy now and counting. And I am determined, I&#8217;m gonna get them all done.
But Danny, it&#8217;s the same thing with you. One thing. If it&#8217;s worshiping statues, okay. Let&#8217;s deal with that. Let&#8217;s knock this thing every which way but loose. Let&#8217;s turn it upside down, and if you&#8211;let me tell you, Danny, what happened to me was, Matt Doula got me on one thing, and it was &#8220;calling no priest &#8216;Father.&#8217; Don&#8217;t call your priest &#8216;Father.'&#8221; He answered that thing every which way but loose, and even though, Danny, I never even admitted to him&#8211;you know my story&#8211;I never even admitted to him he was right. He was right, and it bugged me to no end. Now we went on to thing after thing after thing. And he answered, he answered, he answered. But you gotta start somewhere. Start with one thing. That&#8217;s number one.
Number two: It may be, Danny, that it&#8217;s just not time to talk to him. And that&#8217;s a hard one for you and I to be able to to come to and say, &#8220;You know what, I&#8217;m just not ready.&#8221; I&#8217;ll give you an example; My father and my brother Mike. My father, who just died about a year and a half ago, and a good Catholic; and my brother Mike, who is now a Catholic as well. But both of those guys, when I was evangelizing my mother, my brother Terry, my brother Ted, those two didn&#8217;t want anything. My dad got mad. He&#8217;s like, &#8220;I don&#8217;t want that stuff in my house.&#8221; My brother Mike would just get up and walk away. You know what I found, Danny? It does no good to speak to the back of somebody&#8217;s head. It doesn&#8217;t work. All right? So sometimes it&#8217;s just not time. It took 14 years with my brother Mike before he became Catholic. Took five years with my dad. My brother Terry was wide open. Took six months and now he&#8217;s a Catholic priest. Everybody&#8217;s different.
But here, final thing I will say to you Danny; Take James, chapter 1, verse 5, and this is a prayer that you can pray that you know will be answered, and it will be answered in the affirmative. Isn&#8217;t that cool? Here is a guarantee from God. You ask for this, you get a &#8220;Yes.&#8221; And it&#8217;s this: &#8220;If any man lacks wisdom&#8211;&#8221; and that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re talking about, wisdom. Should I talk to this guy, or should I not? &#8220;If any man lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who upbraideth not&#8211;&#8221; in other words, he&#8217;s not going to say no, right? He will respond yes. &#8220;He gives liberally wisdom to all who ask.&#8221; That&#8217;s what the scripture says in James chapter 1 verse 5. Now, wisdom comes with age most often, and with experience. It&#8217;s going to take time and hard knocks, but you pray for wisdom, and God will give you wisdom concerning this situation.
